Design your own table

Barry, I removed the HUGH table out of my H386 two years ago. Like you, it was too large and difficult to move around it. Plus the leaf was always in the way. Anyway, I removed it and designed my own. Once the table was out of the boat, I was left with a SS sleeve with two flanges on the compression post. I used those flanges to support two smaller tables, a cocktail-like table for drinks and a smaller eating (single place) table facing aft. I started with the cocktail table and drew a few free-hand designs on construction paper (supported by pillows to keep it in place). Once I was happy with the shape I cut it out. Next, I did the same for the upper table. Same approach. I then too my templates to a lumber yard and picked out a 9 ft piece of 1 1/4" thick teak. They were able to cut, clue and do the rough cuts to match my templates (each table has about 4 sections of teak strips clued together). I then routed the underneath sides in order to fit a steel 1" bar which was bolted to the SS flange on the compression post (this for strength). The steel bar was also drilled and attached to the teak table from underneath. Before, assembly, I wet sanded and finished the table tops. Then, it was simply a matter of putting it all together. The most difficult fit was cutting the circular fit of two pieces on the upper table to fit nicely around the compression post. Now I have two functional, pleasing tables that serve my needs and really make the interior look custom.
