shift cable clamp broke

Does anyone know what type of pedistal the install on the 1978 Hunter 30. My shift cable seems to have come loose from its attachment point inside the pedistal. Anyone have a parts or breakdown book? Can it be fixed without removing the pedistal? denny

May be an Edson

I have an Edson pedestal on my 1980 Hunter 30. If you go online to www.edsonmarine.com, you can look through their catalog to see if yours matches. They also have info on repairs.

pedestal comes apart in sections

I have a 79, 37C. Also has an Edson. I had to do a similar repair recently. Remove the compass (mine had 3 screws) and that exposes the the top of the steering mechanism and the throtle/shift controls. The rest of the pedestal comes apart in sections. The cable holds on to the shift lever with a cleavis pin (inself held with a cotter pin). Fairly standard stuff you can pick up anywhere (WestMarine) once you know the size you need. You may need to replace the cable itself, depending on age.

May be YSM

Take a look at the locking nut on the wheel. If it has a "Y" you have the discontinued Yacht Specialty System also known as the Merryman. The compass comes off with a few screws. Next a ring with four screws. Now the fun part. 4 more screws for the next ring which you will not get out, but will have to drill and tap. If you get this apart let me know, as I could not. You may try all kinds of solvents and also heat. Stainless screws in Alumininum. When you get here, you should be able to fix it. If you do not have a wheel brake, put one on now as you will have every thing taken apart that you need to take apart. Wheel brake available from this site in the store section. Good luck. Ian

Edson...

I think they used Edson at the time (YSM is out of business). Try EMailing Edson and asking them... they have records of every installation they were ever consulted on doing, including many that were designed in and not used. They are very helpful and will send drawings and instructions, any of which could help you. Of course they will alasso interpret any markings or numbers you can relay to them on your equipment, even if it is not theirs. JC 2

I have Yacht Specialties

My 79 H30 has a Yacht Specialties pedestal. The photos posted also look like a YS. Kevin
