Has anyone had experience pulling the muffler on a Hunter 30. Mine is a 1981 model. It appears as if the muffler is just laying there next to a piece of wood. Thought I'd check here before I start yanking on it...

h30 muffler removal

Mark--I have removed the muffler on my H30 1977 which is probably like yours. The muffler is SS with a SS tab welded to the underside with a hole for a mounting screw. The assbly is screwed into the wood underneath. Mine was easy to remove because the wood was already rotten so it just pulled out. Rather then having it sit in water I hung it underneath the plywood bed that supports the fuel tank. Good Luck and Happy New Year Henry

Henry: So I'm guessing you had to remove the fuel tank and the plywood piece that supports it to gain access to the muffler? I was hoping I wouldn't have to remove the fuel tank. Mark

Before you yank on it....

The original muffler on the 80's vintage Hunter 30 was a Stainless Steel, water-lock muffler with a 2" inlet and outlet. The SS muffler is no longer manufactured, but a Primex fiberglass replacement can be purchased from Marine Mufflers, part Number-MC2. Call 407-886-1144, or West Marine, or just contact Hunter Marine. I replaced the entire exhaust system (mixing elbow, engine hose, muffler, exhaust hose) a few years back. If you disconnect the exhaust hose from the thru hull and the engine hose from the mixing elbow, you can yank the whole thing (forward and over the engine) out from under the fuel tank and battery shelf. Yup! the muffler just sits there next to that piece of wood. The hoses are probably hard as a rock by now so you might as well change them. Be sure to mount the new muffler according to the "This side up" instructions and double clamp everything.
