In the 5 years I've owned my 1979 Hunter30 I've never dropped the anchor and think it's about time to do so. However, after closely assessing the feasability of mounting a decent anchor roller, I find that the area of the bow leaves very little space to do so. The forward cleat and roller fuller mounting pretty much dominate the whole area. It would be an effort to manually drag the anchor out of the locker and ease is over the bow.
My anchor is a 22lb Bruce. Hence my question, does anyone happen to have any pictures of what they have done or recommendations for an anchor roller. My research so far has lead to very favourable reviews on the Windline company in California but their units are HUGE!!!! Thanks again in advance.Rick (toyroom@ns.sympatico.ca)

Take a look at the Garhauer Marine units. They may have something more to your liking. They can also customize a mount if needed. Their prices are usually less than the common off the shelf stuff.

If you don't see something, call and ask for Mark or Guido.

make your own bowsprit?

if you're into it ... there's an article in Good Old Boat Magazine (the last issue before the current one) on making your own bowsprit ...

MaineSail has some pictures on his site that show different anchors ... you might pick up some ideas there

I've got a Vision 32 with no room for a decent bow roller ... I bought a windline but can't come up with an acceptable design to install it. I finally found out I can actually get my 35# Manson Supreme to fit in the anchor locker if I do it just right .... on my first trip using the anchor, I really had no big problems hauling the anchor from the puny original bow roller and by hand once I got to chain ....

My previous boat was a 1980 H30. I added an anchor roller - Simpson-Lawrence KBR-20. I had to angle it slightly to the left of the stem piece and the port side chock had to be moved slightly aft. I installed a backing plate under the deck. I had to remove the left side jib reef hook to get the anchor roller close to the stem piece - just sawed it off. The space on the deck forward of the anchor locker and just aft of the black stem trim plate is 5" long and 6" wide so there was plenty of room to accomodate the new roller. It was a great addition to my boat. .

I had the idea that the chain would be scraping across the deck so I wanted a bow roller to cover to the locker. I wanted to be able to kick the anchor out and not have to worry about it scraping my new paint job(which I haven't done yet).
I did not have the room either for a deck mounted roller. If you don't you are just going to have to move some stuff around. As you can see, I only moved one cleat, the port side is still what came on the boat. I just haven't got around to it yet.
I had to cut one of the support poles for the bow rail. I guess what I would recommend is keep it as close to what it is now. I love to anchor out now that I have a roller that it is easy to retrieve the ground tackle.

Thanks again to you all for your responses and especially the photos.I spoke with Windline yesterday and their recommendation was the BRM-4 which is specific to a 22lb Bruce. Following your advice, I think it best to remove the stem head, black section, chocks, cleat and do a total revamp out of stainless incorporating the new roller and extending the new stainless plate back to the chain locker to prevent scrapping the deck as suggested. Not a Saturday afternoon solution as I had hoped but as you'se have experienced, the relocation of a few items is unavoidable. Thanks again all.Rick

anchor roller

When you get the project finished, I'd like to see a picture. I've been toying with the idea for a few years now, but have been putting it off for other projects. I've been storing my anchor in the anchor locker and dropping it over the bow by hand and it works, but..........
