Hunter 290 Diesel Vibration

Okay, how much is this baby supposed to shake? Never having owned a new boat I can't believe there should be this much vibration below 1800 rpm. Or that Hunter hasn't braced the cabin interior (specifically around the engine compartment) enough. My dealer says the engine has been balanced. Any thoughts?

Shake, rattle and roll

Well, I'm sure you'll get several responses to your post. My own experience is with a 28.5 Hunter (1987),2GM20F,16hp Yanmar.All 2cyl. Yanmars have a range of rpm. that they tend to shake/vibrate in. My boat runs very smooth up to 1800-2200 then it shakes a little up to 2600-2800 then it runs great up to about 3400-3600 (max. rpm).Main variables are ALIGNMENT between motor and prop-shaft, motor mounts, prop pitch, and cutlass bearing. New as yours is, some of these should be dismissed. "Balanced" engine? I don't know...sounds more like an alignment problem to me.

Mine Shakes Too

Len,When new, mine shook alot also, especially at low RPM. There also seems to be a "window" of increased vibration between 2800 - 3000 RPM. Recently had the idle adjusted which cured part of the problem. Also, as the boat has "broken in", vibration has decreased (or I just don't notice it!)

Hunter engine vibration

I have a 28', '89 Hunter. I had the engine mounts changed w/o much improvement. two weeks, the stuffing box started to leak & I went to the local yard - Casa Rio in Mayo, Md. They told me how to re-stuff the box & sold me the necessary items - under $10. I now make 3K with no vibration. Best I could do was 2500 & vibrated like mad [my wife liked it]. Give the stuffing box a try, Tom
