Hunter 29.5 Manual Pumps

1) I am the third owner of my boat - one item is not clear in the boat documentation which was passed on to me. There are two manual pumps in the aft quarter lockers of the 29.5. On the starboard side is a waste overboard pump which is accessed from within the battery locker. On the port side is another pump which is accessed from the outside, below the transom seat. It appears to be a manual bilge pump. Is this correct and where does it draw from as I do not see the end of the line in the bilge?2) Is there a chemical drain opener suitable for the flexible corrugated drain pipes used by Hunter?3) Are there any concerns/issues in installing a guage to indicate the amount of material in the holding tank?

Answers to 2 and 3:

Do NOT use ANY chemical drain opener in any part of your boat's plumbing! Why do you think you need it?"Float" type waste holding tank gauges tend to clog, quit and require removal for periodic cleaning... Unless your tank is metal, check out the foil strip gauge in the West Marine catalog...the strip is applied to the outside of the tank, and therefore cannot ever clog. However, it will not work on a metal tank.

It is a manual Bilge pump

I believe it's a Whale Urchin. On my 29.5 (1995), the tubing terminates aft of the float switch in the bilge.

Bilge pump stupid design

I had a problem identifying the location of the bilge pump hose in the bilge of my '89 H30G until I traced it under all the furniture, etc. To my surprise, the large diameter white hose I saw at the pump inlet goes through a reducer under the stove and emerges in the bilge as a small black hose. Mystery explained. But what stupidity to restrict the manual bilge pump by having a small diameter hose in series with the inlet! Sometimes I wonder about Hunter.
