I am a 1996 Hunter29.5 owner and am going to order a new main.
According to the Hunter sail plan document, the main sail area is 405.7SQFT but a sail loft gave me a plan with 318SQFT, with the same P, E and battens.
I am curious about the difference, any reason why it is so different?

I think the area depends on how the sail is cut. But the experts will chime in shortly no doubt.

Why don't you get a quote from this site to compare. Was your quote from an offshore loft?

The total sail area (triangles) of the 29.5 is 405.75 square feet, but that includes both the jib and the main. The triangular area of the main, with a P of 36.33' and E of 12.67' is 230 sq ft, so without seeing your actual sail, 318 sq ft should give you a lot of roach on the main and thus it is probably pretty accurate. Finally, if you load up this link on the website here: http://sbo.sailboatowners.com/downloads/Hunter_gen_81890691.pdf you can see the sailplan for the boat in pretty good detail with the I, J, P, and E numbers along with the triangular sail area of each sail and the total sail area.
