Anyone have an opinion? http://www.yachtsurvey.com/boatreviews/hunter28.htm Was the hunter 28 slammed because it was a production boat?

Surveyor?

If you noticed, the boat he reviewed was built in 1991 and it was the only Hunter on his list. I would like to think that we all learn something new as we get older and Hunter has come a long way. To be a truly objective surveyor, you would think that he would go and review a current production boat in that class to see if the manufacturer has learned their lessons and improved. Obviously, HE has ALOT to learn.

Two of his comments make me wonder about the rest

He wrote that fatalities are up...this isn't true. When PWCs are factored out, the boating fatality rate has steadily DEcreased for more than a decade. He wrote that people are leaving sailing in droves. Also not true. Unlike powerboat sales, the sale of new sailboats is increasing. Kinda makes you wonder about the rest of what he wrote...how much is fact, and how much is just his admittedly biased opinion.

Genius

If you go through the list of powerboats that this guy slammed you will find many which have always been considered to be quality boats for the money. Emphasis on money. There is not a mass produced boat on the market today which would be acceptable to this guy. He obviously wants to create a reputation as being a hard assed surveyor but if you only have 20K to spend he might let you get by with a Laser. Would I use him to survey a boat, absolutely but I would also keep his comments in perspective. The downside is that you may never get insurance or a loan with his report. I am willing to bet that the boat he ssurveyed is still sailing.

I agree he is biased

I just got a 1992 Hunter 28. It was the most boat for the money I could find. I really like the design! I did notice that the hull was thin and the rig does not look as strong as some I have seen! I still love the boat! Does anyone know of any cases where the rig or hull has failed? I hope not!

We loved our Hunter 28

We owned a 1991 Hunter 28 for three years and really loved it.. All of our sailing was in the San Francisco bay. It handled the bay winds great... many times we sailed across the bay in 25-35 knot winds.. We sold it to moved up to a Hunter 40.. and the Hunter 28 sold three days after we listed it.

Here's what I don't trust

The guy sounds _angry_. If I'm paying for a survey I want someone who can objectively evaluate the boat, not launch into some tirade about his personal design values. Looks like a very large chip sitting on his shoulder, to me.

slams them all at www.yachtsurvey.com/boatreviews/

I went to the web site www.yachtsurvey.com/boatreviews/ and after a look at 4 reviews, determined that this guy slams them all.. so adios to his "insightful reviews"..

Not Necessarily...

Having read some of his comments, I found them generally quite complementary of tyhe better quality boats on the list. Although understandable being a Hunter list, it sounds to me like some of us are a bit too sensitive about Hunter quality. There are not the best boats in the world and any objective review will describe their weaknesses.

Perspective

I have been looking for a larger boat to replace my Hunter 23which I have enjoyed and appreciated for the quality relative to price.Once I considered the value of the older "better built boats",I decided that the 28 was my best value. The boat is a 92 and is in really good condition. It will need maintenance but don't they all.I am not expecting the boat to be a blue water boat-that would not be realistic. There are a lot of Hunters out there that seem to be around a long time so they must be reasonably well built.I appreciated reading all the responses to the article as I settle on Saturday.Any other long term owners who have an opinion on their boat?

Jerry, I looked at that boat! You got it from TideWater right? I bought the one in Mystic. The owner dropped the price to match the one you got! We should keep in touch since we are both new hunter 28 owners! My old boat is a San Jaun 21. My dad bought it new in 1974! I love that boat and am keeping it! I also have a sunfish. A man can't have enough sailboats..... Jim

I don't know...

...based on my experince, some of the comments are justified. In regard to the aft cabin, we have a name for it on "Miss Julia's Money", storage! I have never slept in it, prefering the V bunk instead. As for the cushions, we cover the V bunk cushions with sleeping bags to make them more comfortable. I'm 5"10", 210 lb and the head is poorly designed for someone my size. Also I can't get to the Yanmar transmission and oil dipsticks without going through major contortions (access is through the Head). The comments on the Settee were right on, it is too crowded to make full us of it and we either take turns at the settee or more likely eat in the cockpit. Also the destroyer wheel comments are justified, as even our medium sized dog can't easily get around it. As for the rest, I would agree he's a bit harsh. Overall we love the boat for what we use her for, a day sailor and coastal cruiser. I'm not taking her to Bermuda or Hawaii, nor do I want to. Yes, she has some problems, but then again all boats do.
