I'm about to replace the holding tank on my Hunter 28 and would greatly appreciate thoughts on my plan!

1. Ronco has a 9 GAL tank that will work, 18.5"x17"x7.5", but it's capacity is less.
2. Next up is the 11 GAL at 24"x15.5"x8.25"; does anyone know if the longer than stock (24" v. 20") will fit? I'll make field measurements next trip to the boat if no one has tried this.
3. To remove the old & fit the new tank, I'm cutting the aft bulkhead and fitting this: Item: HAT-1324-3 from this company: http://www.thmarine.com/products/Ac...-Hatches/Sure-Seal™-Hatches/Sure-Seal-Hatches

Thank you in advance!

We've cut through the bulkhead and have the hatch in place. The next, rather nasty, step is to remove the old leaking holding tank and check to see the largest Ronco tank that will fit. We're using a cardboard mockup to check. I hope the Ronco B388 will fit; it's 24"x18.5"x8.5", just a bit larger than the existing tank.

Good sailing and best regards,

Electro Scan or Purasan in Hunter 28?

The old, who-in-their-right-mind, leaking waste tank is no longer fouling my boat. I do plan to hunt down and maim the genius who decided to build a boat around an aluminum waste tank.

Unfortunately, the only Ronco tank that will fit is the model B532; only 9 GAL.

Thinking now of fitting an Electro Scan or Purasan, if I can find a way to mount it. I'll ring them today to see what they advise.

Has anyone on the board put one of these in a Hunter 28? Your advise would be greatly appreciated.

Good sailing and best regards,
Leo

Looks like I'm going to go with the Electro Scan system; the principal advantage for me is being able to use the head all year, even when the dock water and pump out station are shut off to prevent freezing.

I talked to Rairatan and believe I can install in my Hunter 28. I'll be taking final (I hope) measurements this weekend to build the platform for the Electro Scan.

Sorry I've gotten no replies to my posts; makes me feel like the old-time comic joke; tapping the microphone and asking, "is this thing on???"

I will post pictures of the installation.

Fair winds...

Have you looked at having a custom tank made? I had one made on my 30t years ago and went from a 15 gallon tank to 25.

Thank you, Sailgunner,
I did check on the cost of a custom tank from Ronco, but the price was quite high.
Unless I can't physically locate the Electro Scan in my boat, I prefer that solution to a holding tank.

Holding tank question

I have the same issue on my 90 Hunter 28. I am about to take the same route you did, but am wondering if you have had any issues with the bulkhead after the hatch installation. I am worried about weakening the bulkhead. Also, any hints about getting the old tank out? Did you end up installing the Ronco B532?
BTW, did you find the engineer who designed this? I would like a word with him.
Gary

There are no problems with the bulkhead; I did check with Hunter before cutting the hole, which also serves to ease access to the batteries. I put in a Purasan, and it's working perfectly.
Rather than maim the offending engineer who specified an aluminum holding tank which is guaranteed to leak and be impossible to remove through any existing opening, I've elected to let him or her live out their life in the abject shame they so richly deserve.

Fair winds,
Leo
