I'm considering purchasing a 1988 28.5 but am concerned about the condition of the engine. It appeared to be hard starting, and noisy when first started. Anything particular I should look for? How difficult and costly is an overhaul?

Get It surveyed

For a 1988, I suspect the Yanmar (if it is) is not in need of overhaul unless severely mistreated by previous owner(s). This is one tough engine. Hard starting may mean bad final filter, bad fuel (old/dirty), poor connections on starter, low batteries, or any number of other "little" things. I suspect the 28.5 has the 2GM20F which, at 2 cylinders, is very noisy at startup anyway. Actually, it's noisy all the time. :) At any rate, compare the following: Cost of new boat if destroyed when engine fails: $20k-$30K Cost of New Engine: $2k-$6k Cost of Overhaul:$1k - $4K Cost of Survey: $10 per foot or roughly $300

While a survey would be helpful, maybe a compression tester will give you an idea of the status or wear on the piston rings.

What was the temperature

My Yanmar is hard starting when the water temp gets below 60 degrees. Submitted a question about it a couple of months ago and checking the compression was the input, but it has good compression, think Yanmar should have installed glow plugs but other wise it runs well. good luck

The cost of a complete overhaul is significant, but its doubtful that is needed unless the engine was run while low on oil or the oil wasn't changed often enough. Some surveyors and/or machine shops can do an oil analysis on it. In cold weather many diesels will be hard to start. Try advancing the throttle to about 1/2 to 3/4 and then backing off as it starts, but don't over-rev it. These aren't the smoothest engines around anyway, especially if the shaft is misaligned or the cutless bearing is bad, or the motor mounts are loose or broken. But the 2GM20 is a workhorse, very dependable in spite of its tendency to vibrate.

Thank you all for your comments. Have also seen similar views. The day the engine was "hard starting" and loud, was about 60 degrees. I feel a lot better about it now and plan on taking a second look (and take someone with me that knows more about diesels).
