Hello, I have enjoyed my 85 model 28.5 for years but never was told the corrrect way to set up the boom. Double thru pulleys aft and locking tabs forward. I have a stainless cable top of mast attached to rope pulley..then rope thru double aft boom internal pulleys..well it works but not right. Maybe someone could send me a diagram. I'm at girlscoutdad2004@hotmail.com.
Thanks, Bob

H28.5 Boom

I have a 1986 H28.5 and assume the boom is same as the 1985 model. The two aft blocks in the boom are for running two mainsail reefing lines that are controlled and locked under the forward end of the boom with port and starboard levers. The basics of jeefy reefing are that one of the aft lines running from the forward end of the boom (inside it) exits the boom aft around one of the blocks, goes up to the first reef point, through the reef point and then back down to the boom where it either goes thru the foot of the sail and around the boom or directly to a pad eye or cheek block on the boom. The second line is rigged the same way only is longer to reach and pass thru the uppermost reef point on your main -- if you have one.

The stainless cable you describe sounds like a topping lift which may begin at the top of your mast and down to a block a foot or so above the boom and then back down to the boom and terminating at a horn cleat on the side of the boom. You should be able to use this line to control the height of the boom and the tension on the leech of your main when it is hoisted.

Hope this helps.

yes..I do understand the reefing, thanks. My boat has 2 internal pulley wheels at the rear of the boom. How are they threaded and what are they used for. I am using them for the topping lift. The boom front has locking clamps for the lines going thru the boom to these pulley wheels. On the port side is the short end locked down. Then it goes to the port pulley wheel and out to the top lift pulley..down to the starboard internal wheel and to the starboard locking clamp. This clamp I use to adjust height of the boom back there. Leftover line is stored on the mast between the shroud. This can't be right and it is inconvienant to adjust. Do you have these internal pulleys? and how should they be used..and what is the correct way to adjust the boom height? Thanks..

The two aft blocks ("pulley wheels") are used for the reefing lines. They are threaded (at least by me) from the forward end of the boom by using a light messenger line attached to small fishing sinker. Lower the aft end of the boom, drop in the messenger and fish it out the aft end on the same side of the boom that you inserted it at the forward end. Then attach the messenger to the reefing line and pull it thru. When reefing, the forward end of this line is tensioned and locked in place with its lever to hold the leech of the sail down to the boom (I then secure it with another line around the boom).

My topping lift runs from the top of the mast to a cheeck block at the aft end of the boom, then foward along the boom to a horn cleat on the boom. It does not run inside the boom. I have seen other topping lifts on H28.5s that start at the mast head, drop down to the aft end of the boom where it is met with a small block attached to the aft end of the boom, through the block and then back down horn cleat on the aft end of the boom.

From the sound of it, it seems your boat is rigged to use the reefing line blocks for the topping lift.
