The Hunter people tell me the Shift Cable is 11 ft. They also tell me typically the throttle cale is 1 ft longer. If any one can confirm the foot longer that would be a big help. Trying to disconnect the clip that holds the throttle cable in place in the pedistal column. That screw is pretty tight. If I break it off anyone have good ideas on how to clamp with a different approach to hold the cable in place?

Do your best not to break the screw. Use some penetrating oil & hit it with a hammer. If possible heat it with a torch, this works! If you strip the head or break it have someone weld a nut on it. The heat from welding will likely allow you to remove it.

Good luck.

Great thoughts. This past weekend it broke loose so I was able to get the cable out. Glad it came loose, as the throttle cable ended up being 11 ft tip to tip. Now the challange of getting it threaded back along the original path to the engine.

Jim, I just taped the new cable to the old, and pulled it through (on a H29.5). It worked better pulling it up from the cockpit. When I tried to pull it down through the bulkhead it kept getting snagged. Also, I tied a messenger line on the new cable to make it easier if I need to pull a cable through in the future.

That would havd been the smart way to do it. unfortunately I was uncomfortable with the dimensions i recieved. All went well this weekend getting her put back together. the hardest part was getting the ended up being getting the cable back into the clamp in the pedistal. She works like a champ now. That throttle cable moves really smooth did not realize just how tight it was until I changed out the cable.

Guess my next project is a bottom job. Hope that is why I smoke up and choke out when I get past 2600 rpm under load. That Yanmar will get up to 3600 easily with no smoke as long as I am not underway.

Any thoughts other than bottom job?

What engine you have there? Have you ever run in gear beyond 2600rpm prior to now?

No, fastest she ever got to was 3000 in neutral. As she stalls sounds like the valves are clattering to beat all.

Jim, my Hunter is a 1987, have very tight shift cable, have had pedestal apart to fix housing that cracked, am thinking new cable would reduce stress/strain on remaining sections (epoxied piece that cracked off). Did I read correctly that both cables are 11 ft? Figuring if I am doing one, may as well do both.
Also, are LED lights in compass still working? If so, do you know if they are wired to running lights? Wiring behind panel is a mess, have been avoiding trying to trace everything...
Thanks,
Lisa

I only did the throttle cable. But you are wiser than I, do both. It was a challange getting the cable back up and in the right place with the little retaining clip 1/2 way up. The gear shift cable is one foot longer as it had to make that loop up and back down to the shift lever, it is 12 ft. As for the Compass light mine was wired to my cabin lights breaker. Yes you have to be careful behind that panel, those retainer screws have a lot of wires they are holding in place. And they come loose pretty easily.

All in all it is not a bad job changing out the cables.

Have fun she is a great boat.

Yes, great boat, handles so easily. My second season - last year put on blinders and just sailed, this year starting to redo, upgrade, tweak... Redid the bottom this spring, lots of elbow grease to get all the old layers off, but very satisfying.
Compass on cabin light breaker, interesting... that option was not tested, lol.
I may have other questions, if you don't mind, thank you!
Do you race yours? Know the phrf rating?

Wow, I'm in the process of replacing the gear shift cable. I measured each section, and came up with a little over 12 feet so I added 15% and rounded up to 13 feet. It could be a foot shorter, but the slack fits nicely under the sail locker lip,if that makes since. So far the hardest part was hooking up the new cable to the motor mount You have to be a contortionist to get to the screws.

The throttle cable was considerably easier than the shift cable appears to be. Thought I would hold back on that one.
