Hunter 28.5 Bimini Problem

Good day: I will be installing a bimini on my Hunter 28.5 shortly but understand that some modification has to be done regarding the (low) boom height. Would any 28.5 owner advise what they have done to the boom, mainsail, height of bimini etc to overcome this problem. Also, if you have any pictures of yours I would greatly appreciate seeing how it is mounted, height, size etc. Many thanks in advance.

Bimini on 28.5

If you can still get into the Gallery site on Huntertwntyeightfive.com,
check out Celebration II Bimini photos.
I had a new main sail cut such that the boom was 8" higher at the aft end, and added slightly more roach to make up for the 'lost' area. The Bimini was mounted on the stern rail pulpit to give about 6'-1" headroom, and the boom clears the Bimini while sailing. You could also have a flatening reef cringle added to the aft end of the main about 8-10" above the boom and tie in a flatening reef to get the same effect without 'cutting' the Main.

All great advise, thank you. I can't get into the old site; "503 - service unavailable" pops up but will get as many measurements as I can (both on the hard and after launch) to give the supplier (Genco of Toronto) as much information as possible. As well, it will have to be above the horizontal mast and supports as I transit down the Rideau Canal to Lake Ontario, but I can adjust the supports to accommodate that. Spring ain't comin' soon enough here in Ontario!! :-( Thanks again.

The bimini frames on my '86 H28.5 were secured to the deck coaming just aft of the winches. Like Stu, I had the main leech reduced a few inches to clear the deployed bimini and I had standing headroom under it.

Thanks Warren and Stu: If you have any pictures kicking around and if it is not too much of an inconvenience, I sure would like to see them, if not for anything else, to evaluate the pros and cons of deck vs rail mounting and if they can fold back or is that prevented by the double backstay? Very much obliged in advance. (Weather update: can see parts of the driveway now but not the lawn!)

Re: Bimini pics

That is terrific Warren. Thank you very much. That is a great help. Definitely a picture (or pictures) being worth a thousand words. I can't tell but does it have the means to 'fold' back, towards the backstays and how much forward does it go. I have a dodger installed and the company provides a 'joiner' to connect the bimini with the dodger when the mainsheet / traveller is not being used (ie: anchored or at the dock.)

As an aside, your toerails seem to be the reverse of mine. That is, mine are through bolted on the other side (inside) where yours appear to be on the outside.??

Thanks again.Ontario Guy

When not opened, my bimini folded up against the twin backstays (one bow aft and two forward of the stays). When open, the bimini would reach forward to a within a few inches of the mainsheet gear. Yes, the toerail on my boat was bolted on the outboard side of it. My boat is an '86, what is yours?

Two more great pictures and more information re the folding of it. Many thanks again Warren. Collectively I think that I have enough to take to Genco (the bimini company in Toronto) as soon as I can get on the boat to take specific measurements.

My Hunter 28.5 is a 1988 #788. Not too sure what # ended the production line but I think 1988 was the last year of production.

Thanks again Warren. This has been a tremendous help.
