In a few weeks I'm pulling the Blue Pearl for painting and will replace an old jib furler and forestay with the help of a bucket truck. The topping lift needs replacement however I'm unable to tell if it's fixed to the mast head with anything but a pin and cotter pin. I've had her for two years now and this is my last line to replace.
Would someone tell me if I order the line with a simple eye splice is going to work, just needing to slip the pin out and switch the new for the old? Or, should I get an eyes splice which has the metal eye reinforcement?
I've used binoculars but can't get a good look from the ground.
Thank you. I'd sure like to be able to offer advice on this forum to others' questions but I'm learning as I go and the thing I've learned the most is that I've got a lot more to learn!

Can I suggest that if you have one of the newer digital camera with 5x or 10x's optical zoom, that's probably a better alternative to binoculars. Also you can zoom further on the computer. Has worked for me to get a close-up of my masthead stuff.

Do you know if existing topping lift is orginal? I see that no-one has downloaded the owner's manual to SBO for your model. Hunter usually includes a page in their manuals with the running rigging specifications. Maybe you could call them?

On my much older than yours 1980 36, the topping lift is 3/16" wire. It is fixed to the masthead with a clevis pin secured with a cotter pin. The loop does have a metal thimble eye. (I believe a metal thimble should be essential to prevent the sharp bending of the wire around the pin to prevent premature wear-through of the wire strands.)

I have an '82 H27. My topping lift is coated cable with thimbled eye at each end. It has a pin and cotter pin at top and a small block that the control line from the boom goes through.

Great idea about the camera! Thank you. I suspect the rigging is pretty similar, too.

That's pretty much what I was looking at, I think. The manual doesn't have a diagram but I do have the sizes. "Thimbled" eye. Hmmm. Thanks! That's one for the file!
