I am the new owner of a beautiful 1982 Hunter 27'. There is a Y switch which enables me to pump the head into a holding tank or overboard when at sea. There is a macerator but i can't figure out how to pump the holding tank overboard when at sea.
Your help would be appreciated. Olegranpop, St. Pete., Fl.

H27

Our 1989 H28 holding tank had a 'Y' valve where you could switch from pumping waste from the toilet into the holding tank or directly overboard. Yours may be the same way, unless the PO installed an electric (I'm unaware of a manual macerator pump) macerator pump, which would be used to pump out the holding tank contents overboard.

Our P42 power panel has a macerator switch that turns the pump on to extract the holding tank contents. There is a through hull valve that first must be opened before activating the pump.

Holding tank

Is the pump electric or manual? How do you know it is a macerator pump? I've never heard of a manual macerator pump.

Most smaller boats have a set up that allows you to pump waste into a holding tank or directly overboard using a wye valve. Some POs make modifications so I have to rely upon what you say. If it is a manual whale type pump, it could be confused for a bilge pump unless it is plumbed into the holding tank. If it is plumbed into the holding tank it should be just a matter of manually pumping the tank contents overboard, probably through the wye valve.

Our large boat (not our previous H28) has an electric macerator pump connected to a through hull that allows me to empty the holding tank contents overboard. In our case both heads are plumbed into the holding tank. My choice to empty the holding tank is either through a pump out facility or the macerator pump.

Terry raises an interesting question...

Are you sure it IS a macerator, not a manual diaphragm pump? So...Is there any info on the pump that can tell us the mfr? Or...what does the pump look like (posting a photo would definitely be better than trying ot describe it?

Meanwhile, if you're sure it IS a macerator, the age of your boat guarantees that nothing in the system can still be original...or if it is, it's beyond worn out. So how 'bout a photo tour of your whole system so we can get an ideaof the make/model/age of ALL the components in it?
