I just bought a 1980 hunter 27 without the halyards connected and run through the mast. I've tried everything to install the new ones, including using a wire fish and climbing the mast (gave up half way) Is there any way to run the new halyards short of unstepping the mast? thanks in advance-

Bicycle chain

Chris:

Try attaching some bicycle chain to the end of a fish line.

The chain will provide enough weight to the line. Once you have it to the exit point you can connect the fish line to the halyard and you should be good to go.

RE: Bicycle chain

Thanks for the response. The Bicycle chain is a great idea. Any ideas on how to get to the top of the mast to feed it down? I have a bousins chair, but have no halyard to use it. It is on a mooring now, but there is a marina close that will let us do some work. they were not crazy about us leaning a ladder against the mast to get to the top. When I was using the wire fish, I was trying to push it up the mast, but got hung up about 1/3 of the way up.

may be up s--t creek without a paddle.

Chris:

That is a good point.

If you can take you boat to a yard they may be able to drop these lines down the mast.

Actually you are better off dropping the stick and checking the wiring and feeding the fish lines down the stick.

Chances are you will have some electrical problems to repair and you can take care of these items at the same time.

A bridge or pier nearby?

Maybe you can tie up to a bridge or pier nearby and then have access to the top of the mast. Or possibly pull up to a dock and rent a cherry picker...
Might not hurt to contact a local rigger, they may have a way of getting up there and running the lines for you - a side benefit is that they can inspect the rig at the same time.

this worked for my slip mate

The guy next to me had the same problem. we hooked my spin halyard on the other side of his boat then winched the two together. went up my mast to dropthe lines down his. worked well.

I think...

You'll have to take it down if it's like my 1981 H27. My main and genoa halyards are internal and exit through sheaves in the base of the mast step before leading back to the cockpit. If yours is like that, then getting the bicycle chain, leading line, or whatever out through that sheave will be nearly impossible. Of course, there is variation amongst Hunters, so maybe yours is different.

re:

Thanks for your responses, Definitely some good ideas, I am going to try everything I can to not drop the mast. but will if I have to. Is there any clear problems with using a painters ladder and leaning it against the mast, facing the stern? I would reinforce the pressure points on the deck by placing plywood in between the mast and the deck.

correction

correction- I would place the plywood in between the ladder and the deck to distribute the weight evenly.

another idea

they do make mast climbers that dont use ropes they are like climbing tree stands
