I am looking at at Hunter 27, 1983. It has this fiberglass liner on the inside of the cabin. My question is, how do you get to anything with this liner? What if you have to work on something get to something that comes through the hull? I have seen some posts in the archive about mildew. Can this be a problem with liners? Thanks, groundhog

Nothing in the liner!
Groundhog: There is really nothing in the liner. If you are referring to deck organizers, there are aluminum plates glassed into the deck. Other item may be through bolted. Most of the Hunters were mfg. this way. If you need to add something, quite often you just need to drill/tap the deck to install a piece of equipment.

That's not entirely accurate Steve. On the Cherubinis at least there is wiring in there. And when it goes then Sayonora. And since it is wired in series you can lose a whole side of boat lighting when one wire gives out. Right now I have an external wire running between my nav station light and quarterberth light(port side). Without that jumper I would have no quarterberth lights AND no starboard lights. Steve is correct about deck fittings. Some are screwed into the core or thru-bolted. I don't think the H27 had any threaded plates.

If you have not already replaced the thru hull in the locker below the sink in the head be aware that the backing flange nut loads on the liner and not the hull itself. The hole needs to be enlarged so that the thru hull is trapped in the hull only. Afted a haul out I chased a substantial leak for an extended period of time only to find the thru hull cracked when the boat was in the travel lift.

Well, what has me very concerned is that there is a fair amount of water in the bilge, also just above the sink area, and I noticed some black colored water in the engine compartment. The floorboards are gone and have been replaced with what looks like pine replacements. The originals probably rotted out. The current owner says the stanchion on the port side near the sink is where some water is comming in. It is loose. groundhog

Groundhog, Black water seems like an engine oil leak. The Yanmar diesel have oil lines running in the front of the engine under the water pump. Those lines get corroded and you may spring an oil leak. It is against the law to pump out oil contaminated water. If this mix is making it to the bilge this boat could be a serious liability. Touch it, if it is oil I would walk away from that one. I mean the oil line cane be replaced but it will just corrode again and you will be taking out contaminated water for months. Unless the price is fantastic find yourself another boat.

Black water in the galley storage area it from rainwater leaks from the toerail,stantion,port, or hardware on deck above the galley. The dark color comes from the plywood coring in the deck mold. The plywood rots and breaks down and unless replaced will cause a spongey spot in the deck. My boat is 25 years old and though I have stopped the leaks coring damage is evident. I weigh around 200lbs.and even though I would prefer to have decks that are solid as a rock under foot the cure for the deck, a circular saw re-glassing and fairing and non skid application make the small irritation that no one else seems to notice at the bottom of the to do list. The waste water port is another rainwater entry point that should be looked at
