Has anyone had to replace the U shaped slider strips for the new Hunter 27-3. Was it necessary to remove the handrail/hatch keepers or is there someway to avoid that. Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Phil, finding the part is the easy thing. The Hunter 27-3 has no spray hood and the hatch is kept in place by the handrails on the cabin top. It's a pretty tight fit and if the whole rail has to come off it is quite a job. It is attached forward and midway under the Whisperwall headliner and at the aft end under the aft head and stateroom formica/plywood covers.

Charlie. I think you answered your own question. Based on the image you provided of the cover, the only way you can raise the hatch to place the slides appears to be to remove the rails.

If you can get a better picture of the companion way cover, we might be able to apply our expereicne at boat repair to provide helpful suggestions.

Note: Forgot, mine is a 2005 with 5/16's or 3/8 inch bolts welded in the end of the handrail tubes so it is bolted from the other side of the FRP. Later versions had round plates with holes for self tapping screws which would be a snap to remove.

Thanks John, very considerate. Here's a duh moment. Spoke with Pete at Marlow Hunter and he sent some drawings but proposed that maybe you could get away with only taking off one rail. Wow, don't think so but it's worth trying.

Anyways Hunter uses Whisperwall in the overhead of later boats from about 2002. It is already removed so only one aft bulhead cover type piece to remove and all the fasteners are available.

Another thought is to make the U shaped slider more of an L with a serif at the end of the bottom part of the L. Butter the L with some Dow Corning 758 and it should stay there. Or if need be a few #6 short self tappers truss or flat head.

Wow. looking at it closer, it may be possible to just put in the track without taking off the rail. The slot on the installed piece is pretty wide. We will see.

Yeah, break out the old one. Note: the original track may have had screws. Break out whatever then just feed in the new one from aft to forward. Bingo.
