Hi folks. I have a pdf file for the Renault RC8D marine diesel engine, which I'm willing to send to anyone looking for a copy. I sent a copy to Phil (who runs this site) a few weeks ago, but it hasn't been posted yet. Along these lines - anyone out there know of RC8D spare parts or spare engines? I'm specifically interested in the zinc that attaches to the block, as well as the air filter, valves, and rods. If nobody knows of sources for these parts, I may well have a spare parts engine for sale in the near future! Help! Pete Wallace bpwallace@comcast.net

Sorry about that -- now online

I set it aside to compress the file and didn't get back to it. It is now a download in the Reference section of this site: see link below

thx Phil!

postscript re my engine: I repaired my engine over the weekend, correcting the valve timing after having removed the front plate off the block to repair a small crack. I also fabricated a new air filter housing (from wood, PVC and lawnmower filter material), but I haven't hooked it up yet. Boat gets launched on Tuesday, and with any luck, my problems for this year are over (at least as far as engine maintenance goes.

I wasn't able to open the file you mentioned with my ver 5 Acrobat reader..... Any comments on the reliability of this engine? I'm thinking of buying a 1980 model that has this engine.

H27 is a great boat John!

John - I think that engine reliability has everything to do with maintenance history, and that neither my nor anyone elses particular story will necessarily match your experience. My engine was in pretty good shape to start with when I bought the boat 2 years ago. Aside from my own "tinkering gone awry", the engine has been very reliable. However, what I've learned since I bought the boat is that Renault is out of business, and has been out of the marine engine business since 1980. Parts are hard to come by. I didn't know this when I bought the boat, and I didn't have an engine mechanic look it over prior to the purchase. I recommend you have a qualified mechanic look the enigne over in addition to your marine survey (mine didn't do engines) prior to your purchase. The H27 has been a great boat for my family and me, and I'd probably buy a new engine before I bought a new boat. New/refurbished engines run from $2K -$6K plus installation. As long as you know what you're getting into, you should be all set. Bottom line is that if you get an engine in good shape, you should be OK for awhile. However, it's an old engine, and will probably need TLC. On another note, there have been lots of comments about the H27 being underpowered. I will admit that it's no racehorse, but I have had no problems getting to where I need to go. Good Luck, and I hope you enjoy whatever you decide to get! Pete

wow! I shouldn't let so many days go by without checking the site (although I can say I was out on the boat all weekend, first time this year (!) can you shoot me an email with your asking prices for both the zinc and the impeller? I'd be interested in both. Pete Wallace bpwallace@comcast.net
