H27 is a great boat John!
John - I think that engine reliability has everything to do with maintenance history, and that neither my nor anyone elses particular story will necessarily match your experience. My engine was in pretty good shape to start with when I bought the boat 2 years ago. Aside from my own "tinkering gone awry", the engine has been very reliable. However, what I've learned since I bought the boat is that Renault is out of business, and has been out of the marine engine business since 1980. Parts are hard to come by. I didn't know this when I bought the boat, and I didn't have an engine mechanic look it over prior to the purchase. I recommend you have a qualified mechanic look the enigne over in addition to your marine survey (mine didn't do engines) prior to your purchase. The H27 has been a great boat for my family and me, and I'd probably buy a new engine before I bought a new boat. New/refurbished engines run from $2K -$6K plus installation. As long as you know what you're getting into, you should be all set. Bottom line is that if you get an engine in good shape, you should be OK for awhile. However, it's an old engine, and will probably need TLC. On another note, there have been lots of comments about the H27 being underpowered. I will admit that it's no racehorse, but I have had no problems getting to where I need to go.Good Luck, and I hope you enjoy whatever you decide to get!Pete
