Hunter 260 quality problems

I was helping new owners of a 260 rig their boat the other day. Some sloppy rigging of a slightly bent mast(one strut an inch longer than the other for starters) and rudder line improperly rigged so the rudder wouldn't go down which I spent correcting. Looking underneath the boat, which as sitting on a boat lift. I discovered a larg crack in the hull just inside the water ballast fastening line. Looking closer, I noticed how thin the fiberglass was in this area. As a person with 30 years experiance correcting engineering screw-ups, I had written hunter about this problem 3 years ago when I bought my 260 (first year out). I don't know if this is incompetent engineering or sloppy factory work, but obviously the problem continues. Trailer boats usually sit on bunks, weather trailer or boat lifts when they are not in use. This creats higher point loads than a boat sitting in water. It's a shame that an otherwise well built boat would have such a huge engineering mistake or factory quality take it down. This couple will probably be without a boat for a 1/3 of our short summer. Got to agree, Jeff

As the owner of a Hunter 23.5 purchased new in 1994, I agree. I strongly suspect that the marketing and accounting departments at Hunter Marine tend to overrule the Engineering. For a real bargain price I got a good looking, decent performing sailboat with lots of features and room. When you start looking closer at construction detail and in my case, the trailer, things could be better. I'd rather pay a thousand bucks more for the boat and get better hull integrity and a trailer that wasn't an accident waiting to happen. I've had several failures on my boat that could have been dangerous and even life threatening. I woke up in the middle of the night with the bilge rapidly filling with water due to a screw that penetrated the ballast tank. The bilge pump then failed. Thats a little more excitement than I bargained for. Would I buy another Hunter?? Yea...probably. Would I check the details of its construction and systems before signing the check? You bet. Think of this as constructive criticism. Alan Long S/V Random Access

thank you soooo much

Gentlemen- thank you so much for this post. We were expecting our new 260 this week but b/c we ordered tiller, apparently wrong boat was sent up (it had a wheel!) Anyhow- now we will be experiencing 2-3week delay. Do you think it might be wise to get a surveyer to check out the boat before it leaves Fl.? Any other precautions we can take. getting worried.. thanks, Joyce and Bob
