Ted Friend

Hi, I just took delivery of a new 260. We can't wait to use it. We wanted a 4 cycle engine and my dealer put a 9.9 Tohatsu on it. I did not realize until I got it home that it was the short 15" shaft and is too big to tilt up. I know it is an engine he has been trying to move out for over a year. I wanted a 4 cycle because some states and places in the US are banning 2 cycles. Can you get by with a 15" shaft when motoring in ocean swells of up to 3 - 5 feet? We are really worried about this because the times we really need the engine is during sudden storms. Does anyone know of a 4 cycle that fits a 260? Or, are most 4 cycles, weighing twice as much as a 2 cycle, too have and large for a 260? Thanks a lot, did not sleep at all last night worring about this. Ted

Honda

When I had my H260, I had a Honda 4, with extend shaft and pedestal mounted controls. Can see every thing and not worry about bending over to steer with the motor handle, hard to see over cabin.

2 Cycles not outlawed!

Ted: 2 Cycle engines are NOT being outlawed. They are just being re-designed. Lake Tahoe was one of the first places in the country to do this. The newer engines inject the oil into the system. This prevents the oil rich mixtures from being expelled into the water through their exhaust (which pollutes with a combination of Gas and Oil). I am not sure of the terminology but I think that the engines are 2004 compliant. If weight is your concern, you can look around for one of these new engines. But I still think that the Honda and the Yamaha are the best 4 stroke are the best on the market. The Nissan/Tohatsu are good engines and if you can find one with the new certification you will be fine.

15" is Too Short

But there may be a kit available to extend your 15" to 20". Some brands of outboards I know have them. It would seem however that your dealer should put the motor on there you want not the one he is trying to get rid of.

15" is WAY TOO SHORT...

for the boat. Any waves at all will take your prop out of the water. I have an old Johnson Sailmaster which is 25" and it still sucks air at times. Also, one of the advantages to an outboard is that you can take it out of the water. So, sorry to say, but that outboard is wrong for your boat. The Honda four stoke is heavy and expensive however it is 28" and is so quiet that you may forget to turn it off while at idyl. alan

260 engine

Ted, one thing bothers me about your original inquiry is that you said the dealer has been trying to get rid of the engine for a year! Did you accept the boat with this engine but order another type? The engine is to short of a shaft length, but none the less is not a bad engine. Have the dealer (at HIS cost) put on a longer shaft housing or replace the engine. You may need a different type engine mount as you should be able to raise the engine out of the water(tilt up)As far as 4 cycles being heavy they are but not twice the weight. If you really want one it can be installed. The 2 strokes have been and will be around for quite a long time, most of the new one will meet the 2006 emissions rule and I don't know of anywhere that they have been outlawed. I think the dealer tried to pull a quick one buy installing a engine you did not want and more important not the proper size (lenght) The dealer should remendy this TODAY at HIS COST ! If he is adverse to fixing this problem I would remind him the cost of bad press and complain to everyone and anyone who will listen to you starting at HUNTER

Honda 9.9 works

Ted, Last year I bought a 2002 - H260 with a 2000 Honda 9.9. My dealer said I had to get the 2000 Honda, because the dealer said the 2001 didn't have the right connections for the remote control. No problem. I love the boat speed and gas mileage I get. It has a long shaft... but when the winds pick up and there's a good chop on the water, the motor does come out of the water. So I keep the engine speed down, so it doesn't over rev too bad, but it is a problem I can't correct.
