I have a Hunter 260 and would like to install a clamcleat CL257 auto release to hold the rudder down. The line on my downhaul is 3/8" and the CL257 has a max line of 1/4". Does any one know if the CL257 will work with 3/8 line even though it is over size? Does the Hunter 260 come from the factory with 1/4" or 3/8" line for the downhaul? Also does anyone have any better ideas to let the rudder kick up if or I should say when I hit something?

For my clamcleat install I switched my downhaul to 1/4" line. You can stick a stainless washer under the knot to keep it from pulling thru the rudder.

Do not know if it will work on your Hunter, but on my Montgomery I used a bungee cord instead of a line. When the rudder was in the down position the bungee was stretched so thata there was about 70% pull holding it down, when in the up position there was about 35% pull holding it up. If I hit a sand bar or shallow water the rudder would pop from down to the up position.
It is all about fixing the bungee in the correct position on the rudder and transom.
