I am thinking of buying a h260 brand new. Could I take this boat down the coast from Halifax Nova Scotia Canada down as far as Florida? If so what configuration would I need? Any advise would be great. Matt

I wouldn't

I don't believe that the 260 is designed to be an ocean going boat. Moreover, for the price of a new 260 you can get a quality used boat more suitable for ocean travel.

Keel version, maybe

not sure I would want to. But then I sailed from Honolulu to Maui on a 20' boat. A lot of folks thought we were nuts. Many have sailed all the way across oceans in smaller craft and Leifs boats were not alot bigger either.

Intercoastal maybe.

If you even need to ask that question you need to do a lot of reading and research and get a lot of experience before you start out on any significant blue water passages. I doubt Hunter would recommend the 260 for serious blue water passages. Like Rick said, I would look at a used "blue water" boat if that is what you have in mind. That being said, I'd think you could take a 260 (or just about any boat) down the intercoastal, which is sheltered waters. I goes all the way down to the Florida Keys. I don't know how far North it goes, at least to the Chesapeake.

Day Sailing in the Ocean Probably

I would probably take it out for the day but the length of trip your talking about scares me with my Vision 32. The ICW is the way to go if you choose the new H260. I think that the comment to use the required investment for new put to a good used alternative that is capable of ocean going. Remember, new will depreciate so fast that your committed once you start down that path. I know from a new experience of my own. I recently purchased an 8 year old Vision that the owner only got out of the payments. He had no equity at all in the boat after 8 years of paying for the new boat. My gain/his loss. Think about it. There are hundreds of good used boats capable of the passage your thinking of.

New is nice

I just ordered a 270. While I agree with the responses that a 260 is not a solid blue water boat, I would still prefer it over most used boats I've seen for the money. Most aren't well cared for, and are over 20 years old, needing additional $$. I'd charter a boat while on vacation in Florida and skip that canal ride! If I did get a used one, by the way, I'd consider one of those made-to-last Pacific Seacrafts or Westsail 32's tec., a true collector's item.

Hunter H260 Traverse City
Florida via rt95

The best way to get to florida with your 260 is via rt 95, with you boat safely on its trailer. The 260 should be sailed in the ocean only during fair weather, and during the day. Even on the intercoastal you must at times go into the ocean. ie from atlantic city NJ to the cape may canal, from NYC to the manasquan inlet, etc.
