I am replacing the outboard and transome on my boat. The original transome as best I can tell was just a 2 X 6 that others have commented was too close to the cockpit for various reasons. The previous owner put on the a transome with up/down as you see here rebuilt using white oak. (the original broke and sank to the bottom of Green Bay). Here it the question: The new engine is a Nissan 9.8 Hp (Hunter says the boat is rated for up to a 10 HP) but does anyone think the transome extension with the added weight will put too much pressure on the plating or are others working with a similar setup that has faired well. I also went with the 25 inch extra long shaft as the original never really seemed to drop deep enough using the orignal transome.

To answer your question…

…I don’t really know. It seems like a lot of leverage working against you. I rebuilt the transom on my H26 and made it thicker (nearly two inches) and about two and a half inches taller. That gave the motor more height to clear when tilting and I could put an extra set of bolts through the transom up higher. Also, when I laminated the plywood together, I embedded two 3/8 inch stainless cables inside. A friend had his locked motor stolen by someone that just cut the transom off the boat. Put nuts on the inside of the transom bolts for the some reason.
