Hunter 26, mainsail slugs. I own a 1995 Hunter 26. I am pleased with the boat overall. The plastic slug that holds the main to the mast has broken. It is the third slug from the top, and is sewn on to the sail. Is there a way to replace this slug without taking the sail to a loft? It appears the sail must be disasembled, for a new slug to be slid onto the nylon loop. Hunter has well thought out this boat. This seems like way too much work to replace a nylon slug that is exposed to UV. Are there any owners that share my frustration with replacing this expendable part?

That would shoulda been steel

The error is egregious enough that you should call Hunter directly 904 462-3077 to get their reaction, and solution.

slug stuff

You can purchase both the slug and the slug shackle which it fits within and is the part that attaches to the sail itself. Usually the shackles have screws or twist mechaisms (just like stainless shackles). You can buy them at most marine centers or order them from supply houses.

Hi Don, I sewed replacement slugs on...

on our H28 when two broke. I used the heavy nylon twine and sewing awl that you can get from WM. Easy to do without removing the main. Terry

Had them all replaced.

Don: I had all of mine replaced. The loft that did it in the SF bay area put metal slugs on the top and at each reef point and plastic slugs on the rest of the sail. Most of the sails that I have seen have plastic slugs. On my old sail they where plastic and I have had one break in the 13 years that we had the sail on the boat. The total cost for the new slugs including material and labor was about $130.

Did All Mine

On my 23.5 they were all plastic. Seven years of use seemed pretty good. Bought them from the local loft for about $10. replaced all of them in about 15 minutes and the sail goes up and down much easier now.
