Hunter 28.5 Fort Stevenson
I have a 1987 Hunter 26.5 that I have been reviving for the past couple of years. One of the items that I am contemplating is adding a tiller pilot/auto pilot. But I am not certain how or where I would mount the fixed end of the unit. In addition, I have not been thrilled with the overall performance of the long curved tiller handle itself.

I have had this idea in my head to add a machined aluminum post (riser) to the rudder stock, then using a straighter shorter tiller handle.

I've been looking for pictures or information on modifications anyone else may have made. Of if anyone else can relate to my problem?

Good day,

I added one to our Catalina 25 years ago. What I did, to address the mounting issue, was to buy a bracket that mounted underneath the tiller, the bracket held the pin. I was, therefore, able to mount the fixed end on the cockpit seat, which I reinforced underneath with a slab of plywood, suitably painted. Worked great, and I urge you to avoid those arm extenders, they simply don't work if you have to add more than one short one. As always, don't place it too far out of the recommended distances, 'cuz that's how they designed them to work properly. Good luck.
