I am interested in the purchase of a 1985 Hunter 25.5 and would like some imput on the good and bad points of this boat. I will be useing the boat on the so cal coast. Thanks "Mic" PS (don't hold any punches)
Check the BOAT INFORMATION tab at the top of the home page. Find 25.5 an click. Then look for ARCHIVES on the right side of the home page and type in 25.5. You will get info about the boat, specs, reviews and from the archives questions about the boat and problems/fixes.The only thingI have seen is cracks around the chainplates but that is only on one boat so it may be nothing.Seems like a nice boat.
Recently in a phone converation with Cliff R , he related having a 25.5 and what a truly great boat it was, he is a regular here so try to get his attention if he doesnt respond soon, good luck , have fun Mike B
Got ours (Tatamo)18mo ago and love it. Great in winds up to 15 and very fast in slight breezes. Points well and is sea worthy. Good value. Issues..get a second reef point in the main. Very tender over 15k. Has no bilge pump and ice box drains into the bilge...however, no problem so far. We sail Corpus Christi Bay, the ICW and into the Gulf. Had an Erickson 36 previously but enjoy the quickness of the H25.5
Mic I have owned a 23 and a 25.5 and sailed on the 26.5. They all are great boats with the 25.5 and the 26.5 offering different things. The 25.5 is truly the best boat in the 25 ft class compared to Catalina and Oday. It is a big boat for 25 ft. We raced ours and spent a weeks vaction on it two years in a row and it was just perfect. With the addititon of the pop top it is so very comfertable when it gets hot and at the dock. Like all Hunters you will need to change down heads sails earler than most other boats. But the spead comes up when doing so. In heavy air you will want a real good 98% working jib, I had a UK Tape Drive and the boat was very fast We sailed in 6-8 waves on Lake Erie and it was a rough ride and wet but the boat was just fine. If I could have I would have went with the inboard just because of the motor poping out in bad chop, but the trade off for ease of operation and not haveing any motor smell below was woth it. I did find the pop top leaked by a bad design and found it to be a pain in the butt to get fixed and never did get it right after reglassing the slide area of the pop top. The V berth is small but comfertable for one even though my wife and I slept there by extending the seat that covers the head for more head room. The table works well and so does the galley, though more counter space would be nice but an easy fix with a folding up cutting board. The the is lots of good storage and some of the 25.5 guys have takeing out the forward sink and made a locker in its place and it works better for that than another sink. I never had any leaks other than the usuall places like chainplates but an easy fix. Anchor locker could be a little deeper but easy to live with. The quarter berth will need a hatch installed for light and fresh air again easy fix. I would have to say the 25.5 is for me the best boat in the 25 to 28 ft range when you look at boat for the dollar. I really enjoyed my 25.5 and sometimes wonder why I sold her. I was never really excited about the orange colors but for what I paid for it it was a steal. With good sails she is a hard boat to beat and sails well to her numbers. Dick Vance is another one to get an opnion of the boat but he will tell you he loves his as well. Cliff cliffr@bright.net
Thanks you guys out there on the response to the Hunter puechase and we have gone ahead and bought her and have spent the last few days cleaning her out. I bet we found at least a grand worth of hardware in every nick and cranny. One thing that you all may be able to answer for me is what the hey is that well in the right side of the cockpit inside the locker it has a wood cover on it and is rear of the water tank. Thanks again for your input. "MIC" on the vessel "sweetie and me II"
