New to the Hunter 25.5. Has anyone mounted an external fuel tank for the outboard motor? Would like to have a tank near the motor and not have to put the red plastic fuel tank down in the cockpit. Looking at possibly putting a round vertical aluminum 3.5 gallon tank to the side of the outboard motor.
Has anyone done anything like this? I hate to put more holes in the boat, trying to come up with ideas for a mount coming off the side of the existing motor mount. Just wondering if anyone has done anything like this? I currently have a Honda 8 for the boat.

I used a 6 gallon plastic fuel tank with gage that I placed below the seat. It was wide and flat and out of the way. I would not advise installing a fuel tank externally as water may get in it. You will need an other fuel container to bring gas and fill it up and you know some will spill in the water. My 2 cents.

There was a guy at my last marina who did something that turned out very nice. He built a small compartment under his tiller and tored the tank there. It was simple and slid into place in much the same way that the hatch board slats on the companion way slide in. He put a lid over his as well so when at anchor, you could tilt the tiller up and you had extra seating. I tried to mock up a diagram but it did not turn out great. Anyway, you can't use that space while sailing anyway so might as well store your tank there. If you want a more permanent solution, you could build a customized tank that inserts in that space. Just make sure the space vents overboard and not on the same side as our OB.

Thank you. That's not a bad idea. I did see someone's photograph on here that looked like a teak bench in that space.

Teak would look nice especially a slatted one. That would also provide ventillation. If it were mine I'd use trex or some other fake wood so I would not have to sand and varnish EVER :)

Have seen people hang a household 20lbs. (about 5 Gallons liquid volume) Propane tank off the stern. Check propane gas mounts. It would not be a bad idea as Gasoline fumes are heavier than air and could pool in a cockpit where the sole is enclosed. Would not recommend storing a portable gasoline tank in any compartment not vented to the outside of the hull .
