I was contacted by a new owner of a used Hunter 240 in georgia as he was taking on water. I suggested the dye test and when following up after returning working on sailboats for the boy scouts, I was informed it was the gasket under the wing nut had deterioated and needed to be replaced. That is the gizmo to open up the water ballast for water to enter or escape.
You will not notice that until you load up any of the water ballast boats as the top of the lid tank is generally right above the water line.
