Aside from the specs listed, are there any major differences between the 23.5 and the 240. I now own a H26 and am thinking about down sizing to do more trailer sailing. I have been very happy with the H26 which looks amost like new and sails great with the new mylar sails, but I was thinking that a 240 would be alot easier to trailer sail. Any comments would be welcome. Thanks, Ken

I own a 98 H240. I wish the H240 had the bridgedeck at the companionway like the 23.5. I dont think either boat would be much easier to trailer that the H26 to Justify the move.

I have had a 240 and a 260
and went from a 240 to a 260 for the extra interior room, especially the headroom. I liked them both, but the 260 wins hands down. They are very similar to trailer and sail, but the 260 has twice the interior space and comfort.

Mylar sails?
Ken I am in the market for new sails for my 98 H26. Where did you get the Mylar Sails. Was there much difference in healing/performance, is it loose footed. What was the difference in price between the mylar vs dacron, and last but not least If you had to do it again would you still go with the mylar. Thanks for your help. Chris

Ballast
There are some styling differences between the boats that are relatively minor. The big difference is ballast - 240 has 30% more weight underneath it than the 23.5, the latter of which you will find considerably more tender than the already tender 240.

The 240 has a much roomier cockpit, with high seat backs, which make it more comfortable (for me). The stern access is not as open as the 23.5, but it is a great place to sit and let your feet dangle in the water. As mentioned, it's displacement is 600# greater, and it has less sail area than the 23.5. It is a slower more comfortable boat. Maybe we could trade ! I have just been thinking of a 26, since I never trailer my boat.

weight on the trailer is the only issue
Hi Ken, Another Indy Ken here. Like others have said the 26 and 260 are much bigger boats on the interior. If you have tow weight considerations that would be your decision maker. I think the 240 (I have a 98 on Lake Monroe) is right at 4000 lbs towing weight. I believe the 26 and 260 are somewhere between 6000 -7000 lbs dry. I think the towing and mast stepping characteristics are pretty much the same with either model. The new 25 has a lead keel - it's interior is close to my 240 -less ballast tank and about the same towing weight as the 26 and 260. Put your money into a bigger truck to pull the 26! The US automakers deals can't be beat right now.

Thanks to all who responded, I have a vehicle that can pull the 26, I was just thinking that I would be more apt to do more trailer sailing with a 235 or 240. As far as the mylar sails go, they weigh less and seem to allow me to point higher, I don't remember the price, but I think about 25% more then the dacron. They were made by Somerset sails in NY. The main has a fuller roach with a loose foot and gives me more boat speed in lighter air. You also have to reef sooner. I also have a A-Spinn. for off the wind. I can hold my own with a Merrit 25 or J-24 to the first windward mark, but after that I lose some ground down wind. I raced a S2 7.9 and Capri 25 for years, so that may have something to do with it when I race against inexperienced racers. Anyway, the 26 is a great boat with lots of room, I just thought it would be easier to trailer the 23.5 or 240 and not have to give up the big cockpit. Again, thanks for the comments. Ken

The previous owner of my 23.5 trailered the boat from Chicago to Dallas and then to CT, as his jobs changed, but personally feel the trailer is undersized for that distance. I only have trailered it 60 mi tops. I definately prefer the layout of the 26 to the 23.5, especially the location of the head. Other than that, the 23.5 been fine for sailing the Fishers Island Sound/LI Sound area. We occasionally overnight in it, and it's fine for that.
