I'm seriously considering buying a 1985 Hunter 23 that appears to be in very good condition with one exception. The current owner tells me that during a Carolina hurricane several years ago the boat struck a piling which put a hole in the hull. The damage was repaired by a legitimate facility along the Carolina coast (Little Washington) who gave assurances the repaired area is structurally stronger than the original. To see hwere it occurrred is barely visible to the eye and doesn't appear to give problems. Should this scare me off from buying?

Just some thoughts

I bought a Catalina 22 that had similar situation. I never had a problem (although that boat did meet an unfortunate end when it came off a trailer but that is another story). I am not an expert so this advice is based upon common sense. Also, this is based upon a lot of studying of fiberglass repair and some observation of that. I would check the area of damage out thoroughly and if there appears to be in weakness, i.e., soft areas, noticeable or sloppy work on the unfinished side, blisters, leaks, etc, I would reconsider. Since the seller admitted the damange, I would assume he is an honest fellow. Your judgement of the person doing the repair is critical too. If it was me, I would look to see what type of work he does, and maybe get some references.

Thanks

Jim: Thanks for your thoughts. I think you're right on. I intend to ask some more questions and perhaps make a phone call or two. My gut tells me the hull is okay but who wants to be in strong wind, rough water and have a worry in the back of your mind ....

Used boat

I considered buying a boat damaged by a storm. The repairs were ok. If the owner advised you of this, I would still have it surveyed. I finally bought a 22 from one of the Pa lakes for one main reason. Less salt corrosion etc. on the boat. Consider a used boat in fresh water
