i'm sorta a regular on the hunter smaller boats forum but this is my first time to post here. i am considering going a little farther distances w/ my hunter 23 and the oem trailer this summer. my lake is only 10 mi away and a flat drive so i have been able to do without brakes so far....but, for longer distances i'm considering setting-up with surge brakes. my trailer origionally came with brakes and most of the components are still there, but probably rusted into a single mass...(i'll see this weekend if the drums look salvagable). can anyone give me any tips on installations, how they work, experiences, suppliers, benefits, etc? regards~ william

trailer brakes

the biggest difference between car and trailer brakes is that the wheel cylinder on the trailer only go'es one way. You will probable find that the linings are not that worn, but wheel and master cylinders are stuck. I used car parts for the wheel cylinders, but had to replace the surge unit and all brake lines with new.

My trailer brakes were something I thought unneccesary for a boat and trailer of about a ton, until I realized that I would not always tow it with my antique Ford Van. I took the trailer to a trailer specialist in my area and let him replace the rusted surge activator and check out the rest of the system. I could have done it myself but it would have taken me a whole week end to figure it out. Weekends are better spent doing what I can do with confidence or at least doing something I enjoy more. The actuator would cost you $200 at any store. For a couple of hundred more I am more sure that every thing will work for a while.
