I am considering replacing my steaming light with a masthead light up top on my Kenyon mast. My question is , has anyone opened up the top of the Kenyon mast, is it (top plate) removed by unbolting the 2 horizontal bolts just below the upper plate? Also, what will I find inside (conduit etc.)? I will obviously have to rewire the new light, but wonder if it's worth the trouble. I am also condidering just tying the new masthead light to the running lights, and replacing the stupid pergo steaming light fixture. Any Suggestions?

H23 Kenyon Mast head

The horizontal thru-bolts hold the channel (I'm sure there's a proper name for it that I don't know. <g>) to which the main halyard sheave, back stay, and topping lift are attached. Two machine screws attach an oval plate on the very top of the mast to this channel. You would probably mount the masthead light to this plate.There are no conduits in mine, just the wiring to the steaming light, vhf antenna cable, and halyards.Personally, I find raising and lowing the heavier Kenyon mast to be a real PITA, so I'd wait to do this until I had at least one other reason for lowering the mast! Just my opinion! hahaha

I'm not sure I understand...is your new masthead light a steaming light or an anchor light?I did the exact opposite on my Z-Spar mast. I had no steaming light and the masthead anchor light was a heavy assembly with two bulbs. I removed the masthead light and fixed an AquaSignal steaming light to the mast just above the spreaders. I then ran the wire for the old anchor light to the steaming light.I made a new anchor light out of a Davis Megalight (LED), a 2 ft long piece of 1 x 2 poplar with an eye screwed into it about six inches from the top and enough 12 gauge wire to reach the lighter socket in the companionway. After I've anchored for the evening and dropped the main, I raise the light on the main halyard. The six inches of wood above the eye raises the light above everything else at the masthead. Voila!OK, I know the Megalight isn't Coast Guard approved (yet) but the current draw is minimal, it will remain lit all night (can't say the same for most anchor lights), it switches itself off at dawn and I have less weight at the masthead when sailing. What's not to like? Besides, I don't anchor out at night that much anyway.PeterH23 "Raven"
