My Newly purchased 1987 Hunter 23 ( bought it Yesterday) was missing its pintal engaging Mast Crutch, I quickly rigged up a 2x6 board, cut with a U Shape and some tie downs to facilitate transport for the 75 miles to home, but would like to Buy one, or ask other owners what they have done to make their own "Crutch" to keep the mast craddled while on the trailer, and in transit. Any help is appreciated. Cheers, from the "Escape Pod" Seattle. WA.

I have been wanting to build one for a while now.. preferably out of square metal tubing with adjustable height, similar to the one Peter shows in the mod page. Problem is, I can't get anyone to give me any info or measurements other than looking at pictures. If someone has a rough drawing with dimensions, I could just as easily make a bunch of them as just one, and make them available to other H23 owners at cost. I got my millermatic welder just sitting in the garage gathering dust!

Cheers,
Brad

Oh... welcome to the site. I'm sure you will love your H23 and there are plenty of great H23 owners lurking around here that are more than willing to help out when needed.

MANY moons ago (when I still owned an H23), I built a mast crutch similar to what you describe - A 2x6 with wooden blocks that had holes in them to fit over the rudder pintles. I mounted two sets of wooden blocks blocks, so I could adjust the height for either trailering or mast raising.

One primary difference, though, is that I attached a roller at the top end of the 2x6 instead of a yoke-- that way, I could raise the crutch, roll the mast back until I could pin the base to the deck, and then raise the mast the rest of the way using the jib halyard (and some muscle).

I used that setup for about 3 years, until I sold the boat. I figure it was lighter than a square metal tube, and likely cheaper since it was a 2x6 with off-the-shelf hardware bolted on.

Good luck, and let us know what you find!

update. I supplied the diagram to two so far. Please posti it here on the website
I've put it online..
You can grab it at http://www.mrunix.net/h23/resources.html
(it is a PDF file)

I do have a few questions regarding the drawing though.. it doesn't appear to be adjustable in length (which I really would like to have), and I'm still trying to figure out how it is attached to the boat :)

Cheers,
Brad
