Hunter 23 Boarding or Swim Ladder

I had a west marine special but it broke after a few months. May get another one as a temporary fix, but would like to see what others have done for a permanently mounted ladder. I'm thinking the transom is the best place to mount it. Garelick says they are not familiar with this boat and can't advise.

Thanks!

Carboman;

Been a while so I will chirp in sir. No I am not a bird but maybe in another funny sense of course.

Fixed mounted with three or suggest four steps for that boat stern ladder. What ever you do on mounting on the transom wall, remember that is not as solid as some would think. The key is to spread the load out or simply the use of large metal plates either stainless steel or aluminum plates is highly suggested on the interior of the transom. This is a two person install and do not be fooled otherwise and caulk. If attaching anything to the top of the transom, a metal strap inside is highly suggested. Be sure to caulk

I got this one and mounted it on the stern this spring. I LOVE IT. It telescopes and then flips up and rests against the transom. The PO had a ladder on the transom that was 3 rungs and stuck WAY above the transom when flipped up, so I was always removing the bolts and putting it in the lazerette, which means if someone ever fell out, it would be a PITA to quickly retrieve them. This one, I can flip down myself in the water and easily board after swimming.

Mine has a teak planked platform, which is very nice if you need to get in from a dinghy or inflatable. Came with boat from PO, so don't know brand. Will try to take photo later. The PO had it installed with 2X4's as backing, which seems to work OK.

Thanks Paladin27. Did you mount it closer to the water line or up by the rub rail?

Thanks!

I'll have to take a pic of it and post it when I go out there next. I mounted it low enough that when it's swiveled up, the top (bottom step) sits just below the rub rail. So the brackets are about 4" above the water line, I'd say. One thing I actually like about this ladder, which I didn't realize when I bought it, is that it has stops to hold the ladder on an angle when down, so it's not straight up and down. Makes boarding from the water easier.

Oh, probably obvious, but since it's gotta hold a human and especially since it's on an angle, when unfolded.... I put an aluminum backing plate on the bolts inside the transom.
