Help. I just bought a 1993 23.5 Hunter and after raising the mast I had a very difficult time raising the jib and the mainsail was very difficult to raise and could not raise it all the way. I assume there are internal mast pulleys that are jamed or broken, if so how do I replace them? The top of the mast has a cap that is riveted on which looks like it may house the pulleys for the main but I do not see any pulleys for the jib? Any help out there?

Re: Hunter 23.5 Replacing/Repairing Internal mast halyard pu

I have the same year and there are no internal pulleys. The jib halyard has a sheave in a block where it exits the mast up top. I think the block is screwed in and the pin will slide out when it's removed. and the main halyard sheave is on the rear of the cap and easily accessible when the mast is stepped. There are also sheaves in the deck on the starboard side of the mast and most people just reroute the halyards through a block attached to the holes one either side of the mast base. Both should move pretty easily and the main should only be tough when you're not directly into the wind.

Check the reefing line on the main and make sure it has some slack when raising. It's easy to pull the slack out when it's down, but can easily be stuck and preventing it from going higher.

I used to use a downhaul line on the headsail to pull it down from the cockpit and sometimes would have it tied off while raising it. That was a little obvious though and you probably would have had to rig it if you trailered it.

forgot to add, Rigrite.com has all of the parts you'd need, but I think a $25 minimum.

Response

Thanks for the response. Is it possible for the sheave to freeze up or break? If so is it replaceable? The main halyard sheave looks like it is accessible but I do not even see where the jib halyard sheave is located. Any advice?
Thanks,
Alan

They're plastic and I've seen one split down the middle, but still didn't lock up or become very difficult even. It's a simple wheel on an axl;e, no bearings or anything like that. Here's a link to a drawing of the mast that shows the Z-spar part numbers for the exit block and the sheaves. Here's a picture of the exit block (1768D) on Rigrite. The sheave is very easy to replace. If you order one, you may as well order all of them including the ones in the boom.

Re: Hunter 23.5 Replacing/Repairing Internal mast halyard pu

Thanks for the link for the drawing of the mast and the part number and description, they were VERY helpful. From the drawing I discovered that I am missing the exit sheave for my jib halyard. The only confusing part of the diagram is that Rig-Rite lists an exit sheave 1768 ( the entire assembly is part # 3032) but they also show a triple sheave 1051 (entire assembly part # 3032). As far as my main halyard hanging up I think it is the mast top sheave or it is getting hung up on something inside the mast.... Your thoughts?

Re: Hunter 23.5 Replacing/Repairing Internal mast halyard pu

When the 23.5 came out, that was a Z Spar mast. See if you can still see the sticker on the side of the mast to determine if I am correct. Z spar is still operation but only in Europe but not here in the U.S. and that will not be discussed. However, U. S. Spars is the replacement for Z Spar in the U.S. Actually it is Z spar product but under another name but again I will not go into history on that. Look at U.S. Spar website.

After comparing my mast with the drawings I realized that I am missing the masthead sheave and the jib sheave and ordered replacement parts so I should be sailing soon!
