Hunter 22 V-Berth Cushions

More than likely its about manufacturing. Perhaps how the foam is shaped when received by the manufacturer or the best way and least amount of waste when cutting the cloth. Let us know with pictures the outcome of your experience.

I too own an 81 Hunter 22. The v-berth cusions have a peculiar shape. I'm in the process of recovering all my cushions and they're foam rubber. If I may ask, what are your plans to proceed?

Okay. Sewing machine. You're pretty ambitious. I gave up trying to figure out how to thread the darn thing. :cussing: I'll go back. Something I did do though that I thought was pretty smart - at least I think it's smart until somebody on here tells me something I hadn't considered - is I opted using table cloths from WalMart instead of the expensive marine fabric. I figured it's washable and durable and you get a largest selection of colors. Yeah please post your progress.

Well, for my H22, the reason is to gain access to the potty, not that I have ever used it... we just jump into the water...

or use the facilities of the marina.

V-Berth Cushions

Besides giving access to the potty it also gives someone a place to stand and change clothes when you remove the smaller cushions. We have a place to put a curtain for that extra privacy.

The cushions in our boat need to be remade so we have easier access to potty and a place to stand. The previous owner did a nice job making the cushions. They look good but aren't functional. I would like the original v-berth pattern for this 1983 Hunter 22.

I have a salvage '81 Hunter 22 that I've been working on / sailing for about 7 years now, and had made a diagram of ALL of the cushions (OEM) with dimensions. They are in pretty bad shape and they have not been a high priority for replacement so far, as I have not yet worked the "to overnight" TO-DO list. The cushions are "deeply" stowed in the garage attic, and not readily available to remeasure.

Anywho, it may be a little while, but I know I have the dimension sheet somewhere closer at hand. I'll post when I find the sheet.

Well, "a little while" turned into a 'very short while'... See the attached diagram of my 1981 H22 cushions with dimensions. It had to be redrawn as my previous drawing was somewhat unintelligible to anyone but me.

Let me know of any questions / further details. I have some pix as well, but those are harder to find.

Charlie, this is drawing is excellent, and while i don't think I will be replacing them before I sell her, its a good document to give the next owner.

I haven't had cabin cushions for a couple years, the p/o stored them in a shed outside here in FL, and the foam had deteriorated so badly that i just threw them out. The covers were even original, and like most of the other work the p/o did, it was poor at best.

Thanks, just realize that the outer edges of all the cushions are angled inwards to the shape of the hull at that particular location.

Thnx for sharing TR. I may have my original cushions because as you say, the foam is cut at an angle to accommodate the hull shape.

I've been working on learning to operate the sewing machine and some kind of way dropped a needed inside the machine.

But I'm making progress just the same on the pillows that didn't need sewing. Here are some Before and After pictures of my progress so far.

Good deal. With a little practice, you'd be surprised at how easy it is to make your own cushions. It takes time and patience...seemingly in short supply to many these days.

Yes it does. About 2 nights ago, after years of attempting to thread our sewing machine, I not only threaded it but did some stitching. I've decided to patiently take my time and thoroughly learn how to use the sewing machine before tackling my cushion covers. Because I can see now that it probably won't be that difficult with the machine particularly as I grow more comfortable with it and how to use it.

Have fun with it and get exactly what you want, vs a compromise...

BTW, cushions are third on my 'TO-DO' list with my salvage H22, behind V-berth port replacements and topsides repair and painting.

OMG, Thank you so much for the dimensions for the cushions! This is what the v-berth cushions should look like. Just printed out the art work to place in my H22 handbook and in my Dropbox for safe keeping. Would love to get the cushions redone this year but will settle for next year. Thanks again! There is lots to do on the H22 like checking the wiring to see if the lights work. At this time I'm not sure of everything I'll be looking for. : )
