I have a 1982 hunter 22 and can't find much info about the original keel setup for this boat. It appears to me that the one on this boat has been modified, and I would like to modify it back to as original as possible. There is no table in my boat, and there is no winch or other mechanisms to move the keel up and down. Also, The amount of slop in the keel( side to side) suggests that it isn't the original. I can't seem to get the keel rope diagram, the one posted on this website, to load properly. Does anyone have some pictures and dimensions, etc... that would help me to understand how the original setup should be? I appreciate it. If anyone is in either Connecticut, or a reasonable distance from either Portland, Me or Portsmouth, NH and would let me come by sometime to take a look at the setup on their hunter 22 that would be great too( I frequently travel between northwest Connecticut and Portland, Me). My name is Shawn, and my email address is ockybird@yahoo.com. Thanks for your help.

No Table?

Without the table you will have to rig something else up. The keel doesn'y weigh much so you could probably mount a HD camcleat on a teak base at the top rear of the trunk, using SS nuts and bolts. If she's in the water you'll have to pull her to do this. Also some large plastic or neoprene washers should take the slop out of the drop keel.

shawn i'm buying a hunter 22 that has a broken swing keel and any information you get would also help me tremendously. if you call hunter they will mail you a diagram of the cable system to raise and lower the keel, but that's all they have because they don't make the keel. it's made by foss foam. if you call a hunter dealer they will give you the 800 number for hunter and hunter will give you the number for foss foam. if i get any more information i will pass it on to you. good luck tom (tegan28@lycos.com)

Centerboard

The Hunter 22 came with a table mounted on the top of the trunk. At the upper rear inside of the table there is a single block attached to a padeye. The centerboard has a cable attached to a padeye at the back top edge. At the other end of the cable is a single block with becket. The rope is attached to the becket then runs through the block at the back of the table then back through the sheave in the block on the cable and finally it runs through a cam cleat in the back of the table. You could probably raise the board without the blocks but it will be really hard to get it all the way up. You might be able to mount some type of fixed single block to the back of the trunk with a cam cleat mounted next to it and a single block w/becket attached to the cable. Good luck, Dan

does the swing keel go all the way up?

I was wondering if the keel goes all the way into the hull( so when looking at the bottom of the outside of the boat, the keel is not visible when raised all the way), or if part of the back, bottom edge of the keel is still visible? I am wondering this more than anything. I don't think this is the original keel for the boat, and I think it is the wrong size. I have a good idea about how I'm going to raise and lower the keel( basically, with a through hull block and cam cleat that I will attach to the top aft side of the centerboard trunk). This is my big problem is that I don't want to do any work to the keel untill I figure out if this is the proper size keel, or if I should remove it and manufacture another one. I have contacted hunter and they have not told me very much that is helpfull. I have also contacted Foss Foam and they told me 800 bucks for a new one but have not given me any picture or dimensions to go on. So that is what I'm really terying to figure out, if this is the best setup, or if I can make the boat safer, and perform better by restoring the keel to its original specs, if indeed this isn't the original(which I don't believe it to be). Thanks for the info on the pulley setup, and any other info you might or might not have. I'm glad to be able to get any information at all, because it's all greek to me, seeing as how this is the first sizable sailboat I have ever owned.

hangs down

The leading edge of the centerboard sticks out almost a foot from the bottom of the hull. I am not sure of the exact amount of board exposed but going by memory of what it looked like on the trailer before I put it back in. I think I have a picture of my centerboard that I took when I was painting it that would show the shape. If I can find it I will post it here for you to see.
