Hello,
I have a 2003 hunter 22. I trying to find out if the keel retracts fully into the hull when fully retracted. Mine is about 15 inches below the hull when fully retracted.
Thank you,
Happy Hunter

I'm not certain as it is supported by the trailer guide when out of the water (and I'm not diving into marina water to measure it when it's not). That said, I think that 15-inches between hull bottom and lowest keel point is excessive. When on the trailer, the connecting cable between the keel and hydraulic ram is slack. Pull off the keel trunk cover and deterime if the hydraulic ram is fully up. There have been issues reported on this board about the hydraulics failing.

Any weighted keel including centerboards like on the Hunter water ballasted sailboats need to rest on the keel tray or support roller because the bouncing going down the road and/or hanging freely is not good at all as it will cause damage. therefore, if the keel is on that support, that is what it is designed for. The keel does protrude from the centerboard/keel housing when up. The manual does not cover that.

If you own a 216, then please refer to it as the 216, not 22 as that is confusing. I am not sure if you have the 2008 version of the owners manual but if you click Boat Info and go to the downloads and then pull up the 2008 version of the owners manual, it has a lot of good information.

Also, I would advise to contact Chuckwayne via the forum email to see if he knows that as he is a guru on the 216. However, the puzzling question is why you are asking the question when it is apparent there are no issues
