Hunter 216 Sails

I have just aquired a 07 Hunter 216. The hull, rig, and lines are in very good shape. While the sails are pretty good, I have been thinking I would like to replace them.

I saw the new Hunter 22 online. It has a very nice squared off main with multiple battens, and a new jib to match. It looks to be a higher performance set than my current suit.

Does anyone know if that suit will fit on a 216. The mast heights are within a few inches of each other. The hulls and keel appear to be the same design in a new material, the rudder is mounted farther aft on the 22'.

I can't find the new 22' sails dimensions online to help solve this problem.

The newer suit are 41 square feet larger (293 vice 252). It appears this is from a slightly larger jib overlap, and considerably more sail in the upper regions of the main due to the battens and squared off top. I don't think this would press the boat to much though.

Thoughts, and if anyone has tried a higher performance set of sails on this hull.

Per specs, the 216 and 22 displace 1350 lbs and 2000 lbs respective. Sail area for the 216 and 22 are 252 sq. feet and 293 sq. feet. As for the overall length of the hull, the 216 is 2 inches longer. As for the mast length, I cannot determine from the spec sheets if that is the actual lenght of the mast or distance of the mast from the water line.

Until there is more information of the performance of the new 22, I will defer from responding; however, if you feel the need to get the new sails, I would suggest that you contact Glen Stanley at Hunter who heads the small boats. 800-771-5556 ext.
3630. For the cost of new sails and adjustments to the rigging, I would defer on the cost alone from doing anything.

I have a 216 and a 22 here. I may try the new suit on the 216 on a light air day soon. The last 3 times I've raced we tucked in a reef anyways in 18 - 20kts and still sailed well beyond our PHRF rating. I'm not sure if you would ever need the added horsepower.

That is a good question, so I got out my trusty tape measure and measured from the top of the yoke where the boom attaches to the top of the mast extrusion and here is what I get:

Hunter 216: 25' 2-1/2"
Hunter 22: 25' 5"

For what it's worth, our 216 with the sail fully extended we still need to use a cunningham to pull down to keep the luff straight. My guess is that the 22 sail, if it's 2-1/2" taller will be pretty sloppy.

I did not measure the boom length.
