My wife and I are in the market for a sailboat and like the Hunter 212. I have read about weak rudders and long setup time, which concerns me. I learned to sail on Prams, Sunfishes, and Hobies but have not done much sailing in the past 5-10 years. I did sail from Coos Bay, Or to LA a few years ago on a friends 48' boat-great trip!! I am drawn to the 212 for the cabin and percieved ability to overnight and the transom, ease of entry for my chocolate lab. Could any one offer some opinions of a 212 vs. a 216? Interior pictures would be a huge plus. My main concern is the rudder on the 212, I did read on review that said they had a stronger one made. Oh the sailing area is the ICW around Savannah, GA mainly day sailing, with some overnights and sticking our nose out in some of the Sounds. Thanks Jonathan

Leaks
I have heard from alot of ppl that the boat leaks at the mast joint into the cabin. That would be a great concern to me (h216). Just do some more research into it! I have a H23 which I love, its not to big to trailer, it has more than enough room to overnight in for 2 people and a dog, and the draft is only 2'6! A great ICW boat I think! GOod luck

Different purposes
I look at the 212 and 216 as serving different purposes. The 216 is just a large day sailer (which is why I'm considering one) while the 212 makes an attempt at having a usable cabin for overnighting. So, if you really want to overnite, go with the 212. If you want a larger cockpit to share your sailing with some friends, then the 216 is the better choice IMHO. Ron Mehringer h26 Hydro-Therapy

Cracking!
I owned a Hunter 170 and loved the boat. I owned it for about two years and moved up to a Hunter 23. If I were considering another Hunter small trailerable, I would now be concerned about the cracking that many owners are finding with the 140s,170s, and 212s. I haven't read about many problems with the 216 but they have not been on the market as long. And Hunter does not seem to be addressing the problem from what I have read. For what its worth.

Jerry, Thanks for all the pictures! I did find some pictures, mainly the stock photos and some exterior ones. Ron, That was my impression of the 212 and the 216, I am considering the ability to anchor in a cove overnight and sleep. I have read about the windows on the early 212's being head absorbent, which caused cracking, but apparently Hunter changed to a head reflective material later. Is the cracking that has been happening above or below the waterline? And how long does it take to rig after launching for the trailer? Are the quarter berths long enough to sleep in overnight? Say 6' longish? Thank you Jonathan

H212 or H216
I have a H216 and like it a lot. Although, it isn't really made for two people to over-night on. I have added a single bunk inside for one person. Two people would be a stretch. See the improvements section for the H216 from this website for some pictures of the internal bunk I installed in my H216.

Here some thing else you should be concerned about before you spend a lot of money on a H-212 or H-216 The on going problem of the "ACP" material or manufacturing procedures used for these boats still producing cracks :-( Read the post on these issues. There are many other boats out there in your size range that are a fiberglass boat that you could choose from I'm thinking of moving up too, but not another Hunter. Buyer be ware!

Are all great, trailerable boats (the 23.5 and 240 moreso than the 23), with room for 3-4 to sleep comfortably! The 23 doesn't have a dog-friendly transom, I beleive the 23.5 and 240 have more of an entrance back there. But if you want to sleep on the boat and have a dog along, i'd really suggest going in the 23-24' range.
