Hunter 212 Setup Time?

I should have asked this with my other post (Trail to Sail: How fast?). Oh well... How long does it take to set up the Hunter 212 for sailing (from the trailer to the water, ready to sail)? Does it take about as long to prep it for trailering (from the water to the trailer), too? Thanks!

Picnic cat

At the risk of sounding disloyal to Hunter. If really fast setup time is your #1 priority why not just buy the Compac brand Picnic cat. It's a cat boat so it has a large cockpit with a mainsail mast up near the stem and no jib to deal with. It has it's patented mast raising system where the mast pivots in the middle. For the size of boat it has got to be one of the fastest if not the fastest to setup. Also a nice salty looking boat.

set up time

In the beginning just like anything else, it will be a learning curve for set up time. I am familiar with the Com Pac mentioned as a good friend of mine sells them. Set up time can be just as fast with the right equipment. Order the boat with the mast raise system. The bar which the mast sits on should contain a roller of sorts instead of the mickey mouse u shaped holder which will allow you to roll the mast back. I am going to see if Hunter can come up with something better. Order the boat roller furling and you will be able to leave the furling system and sail on the boat during transport. Good luck in lyour decision. Crazy Dave

IT GETS FASTER EVERY TIME

I bought a used h-20 last summer. When I got it home I spent several hours setting it up at my house to learn the ropes. When I got to the lake it took less than 30min. And at the end of the summer it took less than 15min using 2 people. The h-20 sets up nearley the same as the 212. Good Sailing, JOHN.

Hey Crazy Dave

What happens when the supposedly neatly wrapped roller furling unfurls on the highway? Seems difficult to tack at that point. Jim Kolstoe

Thank you!

Thanks for the info. I wrote to Hunter, to ask why they haven't improved the setup time. The Santana literature claims 7 minutes to set up. Who wouldn't want that? Here's their setup: roll mast back (mast crutch has roller), insert in mast step; raise mast, attach forestay with quick-connect auto-tensioner; fold down the boom; fill ballast tank; attach a few lines (shroud lines are always connected; they refer to halyards, sheets, traveller, etc.), unfurl the main and jib; sail away. If Hunter had this setup on their trailerables, I think I'd buy one tomorrow.

Mr. Jim

Undoubtly, I have sold more Hunter trailerable than any other dealer in the country and the imput I give is soley based on experience. You can leave the jib on as it has the sunbrella cover over the sail. Here are the pointers. First, tie the sail securely with the jib sheets. Secondly, I take an extra line and secure the sailwith it going through the clew or the grommet that the jib sheet is attached to. In seventeen years i never have had one to unfurl and will ask those who can vouch for me to verify. Dave alias craxzy

mast crutch

I spoke with Dave Eck at JY who makes the 212 for Hunter and by the way he is doing a good job. You could manufacturer a crutch that could attach at the bakc end of the boat or where the rudder attaches too; however, you cannot and I repeat you cannot travel with the mast in a crutch but on the bar that goes across and attaches on top of the guide ons.
