In process of restoring a 1983 Hunter 20. I am removing all hardware from the hull for painting. The bottom gudgeon fastening screws are turning but not coming out. I cannot find any nuts on the inside of the transom such as the upper gudgeon has.. The gudgeon itself moves a very little bit but will not come off. I don't know anything about how the screws are fastened but I suspect they have an internal 'star' nut on the inside of the wood in the transom that has deteriorated and is now turning with the screws rather than holding its place, allowing the screws to come out. Does any one have experience with this situation? Now I am not so concerned with getting it off for the paint job as I am in assuring the integrity of the gudgeon!
