have a hunter 19 and would like to get a power tilt electric start motor for next year
have a honda 8 hp now which is 11 years old but in good shape
anybody have any ideas where to get the work done
can i possibly trade the old engine or try to sell it
I have had trouble with honda dealers in the area and yamaha seem more popular and easier to service
thanks

Hmmmm, have you considered how much more weight you're planning to hang on your transom and how it is likely to affect fore-aft trim and performance? Your 8hp seems like far more power than a h19 needs (my 2450 lb displacement h23 does fine with a 5hp), and I suspect you will be looking at even more to get the electric start and power tilt.

Not Worth the Effort

Unless you need it for physical reasons even then you might be better off with one of the small single cylinder motors that will be light enough to raise and start.

This question surprises me too. Honda makes good engines. If there is nothing wrong, why are you interested in replacing it? Does the H19 even have a battery?

What do sailboats gain from an electric tilt?

When I changed marinas and no longer had a 45 min motor against river currents to get to my sailing grounds, I changed my 9.9 high thrust for a 5 hp on a Catalina 22 to reduce the weight on the stern.

I do have a lot of current and distance to get out to the sailing area
I am having trouble lifing the engine and pull starting it
i do have a battery but it is for the lights only
maybe i will just get the honda fixed

I am losing thrust at times with the honda and pulled my arm out lifting and starting it
I think a smaller lighter engine might work but we do have strong currents at times to motor against for a few miles to get out of the marina

Four or Five Should do it.

Certainly no more than six. A bigger motor is not going to help much with the current you are only going to go so fast through the water more horsepower will make only a marginal increase in speed and just make more noise and use more gas.

You may be able to make a trade for a 4,5, or 6 HP motor.

Re: Four or Five Should do it.

I have a Nissan9.9 2stroke on our h23.5 and would not consider anything with less power becouse it pushes well at half trottle and where we live there's a lot of current.
If you feel that your motor is not giving enough thrust, see if you can borrow a different propeller and try it with it.
We changed the stock propeller from pitch8 to 7 and slightly bigger blades and it improved the thrust a lot without increasing fuel consumption.
As to lifting it out of the water, you can consider customizing some form of handle at the back of the motor, to give you more leverage.

Four or Five Should do it Really it Will

I have a 6 HP s Stroke on my 23.5 and it will push me around at six knots all day long at three quarter throttle.

If you are against a two knot current you are only going to see four knots. A motor twice as large will not get you back up to six knots it may get you to four and a quarter or maybe even four and a half but not five.

It will help against chop and wind but not current. If you typically only use half throttle seems obvious you have more motor (weight) than you require, not to mention the stresses on the boat with all the extra torque being applied. I doubt this is a problem on the 19 or the 23.5 as the motor mount is very substantial.

West Marine makes a bar to help in raising an outboard motor I’ll look on the Website and post it after the school bus gets here to take my son to school.

Outboard Motor Tilter

Maybe you can get it right here and help support this site.

This should help with the tilting perhaps some work on the motor will get it to start easier and you will not have to change motors at all.
