Outboards only come in two lengths, standard or long. Long is sometimes called "sailboat" length.

Since these lengths are set by the manufactures, we must buy what is offered.

If you have a motor mount that lowers and has multiple stops, either length will work. On a fixed mount the long shaft is usually a better fit.

I recommend you purchase a brand you trust in a price range you can afford. Take a long shaft to replace the one you have. Actual measured length is not that important.

Two Options

Motors come in three sizes 15" a 20" or a 25". The motor is measured from the top of the mount to the cavitation plate on the motor. Generally the cavitation plate should be right at the bottom of the transom. Deeper though is better for motor sailing. I added an extension to mine to bring it from a 20" (long) to a 25" (Xlong) motor. A 6 hp motor is more than adequate for a 19' boat. But to go with a 25" motor you may need an 8hp motor.

I like the Mercury with the grip shift. Not much difference between the brands shop the dealers where you will get yours serviced. Honda in my experience are more tempermental and parts are more expensive and not as available as other brands.

thanks

thanks
i have a fixed mount
Should the prop be a certain level below the hull bottom?
in other words how deep in the water should the prop go?
maybe i can get a 6 hp that will work
Where can I get the mechanism to lift the motor rather than tipping it ?
