Just aquired a '93 Hunter 19 and can't determine how to attach the boom vang at the mast ... it seems to me that a piece of hardware may be missing at the base of the mast, but I'm not sure. Any help would be appreciated.

Did it once

I did it on a 25.5. I just installed a bail on the mast and on the boom. Go as low on the mast as you can, then create an imaginary 45% angle to the boom. That is where the bail goes. Good luck.

19 boom vang

You are missing a 'D ring' that is pinned at the mast foot -- the same pin used to attach the mast. Difficult to get used to installing but does the job. Now that I think about it -- my mast is up for rigging and I didn't fool with the D ring this time -- just looked at the West Marine catalog and will consider using a "stainless steel quick link to attach to the mast stepping bolt. May be a better idea but may induce a twist in the boom vang. Hope this helps. JamesR in Texas

If it is like the 23.5

there is a tang on the pin at the base of the mast, untill I ordered the tang from Hunter I attached mine right to the pin.

Rigging Hunter 19 Boom Vang

Rick and Jim are right, there is a little metal tang that the mast step pin goes through to attach the boom vang. It is a pain in the neck, too. It is a far better idea to get a bail ( a small band of metal that looks like a bucket handle) and bolt it through the mast step. It will be stronger and easier to attach the boom vang to. We bought a 4:1 pruchase with Harken blocks for the mainsheet. For the boom vang we now use the 3:1 tackle that came originally as the mainsheet. Fresh Breezes- Doug King Hunter 19 "Rest Assured"
