When I take my hunter 18 out of the water for the season, the boat has a lot of water in the hull.
Has anyone else experienced this problem?
And what was the repair?
The outside of a boat hull has the gel coat as the water barrier prior to the fiberglass. In addition to the gel coat many owners add a barrier coat and paint. All this is to prevent blisters caused by water defeating these protections.
The inside of your boat has no such protection. Some areas of the cockpit and other high use areas do have gelcoat but the bilge area and much of the inside of boats under 20 feet simply have the fiberglass mat and chopped strand construction and this can allow the water to penetrate the fiberglass and weaken the construction if left long enough.
It is just good practice to protect your investment and keep as much water out as possible if the boat is to be left unused for a long period of time.

My H23 had so much water in it that it used the sink drain as a over flow. The water line inside was even with the sink bowl. I have no idea how long it took to get to that point or how long it stayed there. But I assume it was a very long time. Both the cockpit and anchor locker had drained directly inside due to the drain tubes being broken (rotten). I mentioned this to a friend who said it was hard to believe the trailer didn't buckle under the weight. I know that there was concrete blocks along with the jack, which may have been what saved it. Or it was on the water during the cabin flood, who knows. but it was a mess.
I recently bought a Hunter 185 that took on water when on the mooring and sailing. I found that the U-bolt for towing onto the trailer was loose and water came in when the bow went down below the bolt. I re-sealed and tightened it and all is dry. Something you may want to check.
Before I respond, please advise which specific model and year. That will help. In addition, a little more explanation is needed. Are you finding water in the boat when you go to it or sailing and so forth.
