I recently purchased a Hunter 18.5. The previous owner showed me how he raised the mast using the jib halyard and the winch on the mast, but it seems pretty shaky, especially with any wind or if the parking lot at the launch ramp is not completely level. Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations for safely raising the mast single-handed? Thanks!

Go to the forum archives, type "mast raising" in the search window for the H23, select the widest search parameters and step back QUICK! Much has been written on this subject over the years because the mast on the wing-keel H23 is notoriously difficult to raise unless you have help. There are also at least four systems for single-handed raising in the photo forum. Happy mast raising! Peter H23 "Raven"

mast raising

As Peter suggested there is a wealth of info about different methods, one thing you may or may not find pointed out, when you get ready to step your mast try if you can to have the wind blowing as directly as possible toward the back of the boat , that way you get no or very little side ways wind and if it is really windy the mast goes up easier, , take care Mike Bacome
