Ýf I use an outboard engine for my second hand one year old Hunter 170, should it be long shaft or short shaft?

yes you should use long shaft engine in your all types of sailboats.

Long Shaft

I've got a long shaft 3.5 horse Tohatsu I'm quite happy with. Looking at how she rides and where the anticavitation plate sits, I don't think the short shaft model would suffice. If you can get a four cycle motor, go for it! They tend to be more economical, and a lot, lot cleaner.
