(Please read with a sense of humor) You try so hard to keep them safe. You practice safe storage, and make sure they only hang out with other "good" boats on the water. You check out everyone who is with your 170 and still they come home with a case of the "cracks." What is a good owner to do? Yep, found a 6" long crack around the motor mount tonight. Even slight pressure on the motor mount opened the crack so that the inside of the boat was visible. Drilled it out and filled with devcon and will sand and paint tomorrow. Hopefully that will be my only crack this year!

Cracks, are on going problems for 170 !

Hello Tim, After reading for some time now about cracks appearing on 170's, 146, last August I sold my 170 to move up to a larger boat (Com Pac Eclipse 21)The qulity of the Com Pacs is unsurpress by any other boats that Ive seen in their price range. The most popular seems to be the 16 and 19 footers which seem to be every where and Com Pac is still producing boats, Richard and Gerry (owners) are all ways availble to the owners of Com Pac boat owners to answere question or give advice. I had no cracks in my 170 but I would worry about such things ever since I bought her and learned of the problem, this was one of the contributing factors for me to sell her. The 170 is a great boat, I truely miss not having her, on the other hand, I truelly found a good quality boat that my wife and I truely enjoy. Glenn

Still love my 170

Glenn, I'm glad you found a boat you like in the Eclipse 21. I've seen them before and they are great boats. I am also considering getting a bigger boat, something in the 24 -26 foot range, but I plan to keep my 170. Even with the cracks it is the best boat I've had or used. I love to convenience of it and the fact that as small as it is, it costs almost nothing to own! Not to mention the ease of rigging and launching. All in all, I love the boat. Tim

They are great boats

And you are correct in they are pretty much maintenance and cost free to own. I have been looking at Catilina' 16.5 as a replacement for the Eclipse when it gets to be too much for me to tow, rig and maintain. the teak wood is enough maintenance in itself to keep up with. Enjoy and make the most out of what you have, We some time forget that the simple things bring us the most pleasures in life. Have you been out this year yet ? I hope I get out with in the next couple of weeks, things just keep getting in the way sailing lately, gas price dont help much when you have to tow 50 miles to sail ! Glenn

3 times so far

Glenn, Yes, I've been out 3 times so far this year. I hope to get out again this weekend, but since it is a holiday there may be too many carzies on the lake. Hope you make it out soon! Tim

Check motor mount wood

Tim, If you can, you might check and see how the plywood piece is holding up that supports the motor mount. I have had the same problem and gone through your steps and more. When I had to re-do my transom I found that the plywood there for the rudder mount had rotted which I replaced. In hindsight I wish I had that info before - I would have gone on and replaced the plywood which I'm sure has rotted instead of continuing to have the motor mount with some "play" in it. Just a thought, E

Looked okay

Edwin, Thanks for the advice. I did check the wood on the motor mount and it looked okay. Thanks, Tim
